NASA GLENN IS INVESTIGATING ELECTRON SCREENED, ENHANCED NUCLEAR REACTIONS BY IRRADIATING HIGH DENSITY DEUTERATED MATERIALS USING ELECTRON LINAC GENERATED BREMSSTRAHLUNG GAMMA RAYS. PREVIOUSLY, SUB-THRESHOLD DEUTERON PHOTO-DISSOCIATION WAS OBSERVED BUT THE GAMMA END-POINT COULD NOT BE ACCURATELY DETERMINED. NASA SEEKS TO WORK WITH A FACILITY WHICH CAN PROVIDE A WELL CHARACTERIZED BEAM OF SUFFICIENT FLUX AND LOW ENERGY TO EXPLORE ELECTRON SCREENING AND OTHER CANDIDATE REACTIONS, SUCH AS ENHANCED OPPENHEIMER-PHILLIPS REACTIONS. SUCH CONFIRMATION WOULD BE A SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTION TO THE UNDERSTANDING OF ELECTRON SCREENING BY CONDUCTING THE MEASUREMENTS IN A STATIONARY DEUTERON CENTER OF MASS. EVIDENCE OF REACTIONS WILL BE OBSERVED USING A VARIETY OF NUCLEAR WITNESS MATERIALS, FAST NEUTRON DIAGNOSTICS AND OTHER TECHNIQUES. THE PROJECT IS COMPOSED OF TWO PHASES, (1) HARDWARE PREPARATION AND FEASIBILITY ASSESSMENTS, AND (2) EXPOSURES OF CANDIDATE MATERIALS AND REPORTING. IF PHASE 1 IS SUCCESSFUL IT IS DESIRED TO MOVE QUICKLY INTO PHASE 2 TO ACCOMPLISH OBJECTIVES OF THIS TASK. THE CULMINATION OF THE EFFORT IS TO CONCLUSIVELY DETERMINE IF REACTIONS ARE TAKING PLACE WHEN EXPOSING HIGH DEUTERIUM LOADED METAL LATTICES TO EITHER SUB-THRESHOLD PHOTON OR ELECTRON BEAMS, AND DOCUMENT THE FINDINGS IN JOINTLY-WRITTEN TECHNICAL PAPERS SUITABLE FOR JOURNAL SUBMISSIONS.
