THE MAIN SCIENTIFIC PURPOSE OF THIS BUDGET IS TO PROVIDE FUNDING FOR DATA ANALYSIS OF OBSERVATIONS OF JETDOMINATED ACTIVE GALAXIES (KNOWN AS BLAZARS) TO BE CONDUCTED BY SWIFT SIMULTANEOUSLY WITH ONGOING TESS AND FERMI MONITORING, AS WELL AS PLANNED RADIO IMAGING MONITORING WITH THE KOREAN VLBI NETWORK (KVN). THE PROPOSAL ASKED FOR EIGHT MONTHS OF BIWEEKLY MONITORING OF FOUR BRIGHT BLAZARS NEAR THE NORTH ECLIPTIC POLE, IN THE TESS CONTINUOUS VIEWING ZONE. THE SWIFT ULTRAVIOLET AND ESPECIALLY X-RAY LIGHT CURVES WILL COMPLEMENT THE VERY HIGH-PRECISION, 30-MINUTE CADENCE OPTICAL MONITORING OF TESS AND THE 3-HOUR MONITORING OF FERMI, RESULTING IN A SIMULTANEOUS, MULTIWAVELENGTH DATASET. SUCH MONITORING WILL ALLOW CROSS CORRELATION ANALYSES AND POWER SPECTRAL DENSITY FUNCTION COMPARISONS THAT WERE DIFFICULT OR IMPOSSIBLE USING GAP-DOMINATED GROUNDBASED OPTICAL LIGHT CURVES. THESE TOOLS WILL HELP US UNDERSTAND HOW X-RAY VARIATIONS ARE TEMPORALLY CORRELATED WITH VARIABILITY IN OTHER WAVEBANDS. WE WILL USE THIS INFORMATION TO DETERMINE THE ORIGIN OF THE X-RAY EMISSION IN BLAZARS, WHICH OFTEN EXHIBITS FLARING BEHAVIOR THAT MAY ORIGINATE IN RAPID CHANGES IN JET DIRECTION, LORENTZ FACTOR VARIATIONS, OR HADRONIC PROCESSES WITHIN THE JET. BY THE END OF THE MONITORING CAMPAIGN, THE LIGHT CURVES MUST BE REDUCED AND TRANSFORMED INTO POWER SPECTRA USING STANDARD FOURIER ANALYSES. THE LIGHT CURVES THEMSELVES MUST ALSO BE COMPARED TO THE SIMULTANEOUS LIGHT CURVES FROM TESS, THE DATA REDUCTION OF WHICH IS COMPLEX AND WILL BE CONDUCTED BY PI SMITH USING A PIPELINE SPECIFICALLY DEVELOPED FOR AGN LIGHT CURVES COLLECTED BY KEPLER. THE FINAL SWIFT LIGHT CURVES WILL ALSO BE COMPARED TO KVN IMAGING DATA TO SEARCH FOR BLOB EJECTIONS OR OTHER PHENOMENA THAT ARE COINCIDENT WITH X-RAY FLARES THE KVN DATA WILL BE REDUCED AND ANALYZED BY DR. BINDU RANI, WHO RUNS THE KVN BLAZAR MONITORING PROGRAM. FINALLY, THE DATA WILL BE COMPARED TO THE FERMI LIGHT CURVES, WHICH WILL BE REDUCED BY DRS. BINDU RANI AND GRZEGORZ MADEJSKI. THE TESS DATA ARE RELEASED APPROXIMATELY MONTHLY WITH OBSERVATIONS BEGINNING IN JULY 2019 AND ENDING IN JULY 2020. DURING THIS PERIOD, THE FERMI AND KVN DATA ARE RELEASED A FEW WEEKS AFTER BEING COLLECTED. DRS. RANI, SMITH, AND MADEJSKI WILL COLLECT AND REDUCE THESE AND THE REQUESTED SWIFT DATA AS THEY BECOME AVAILABLE. THE FINAL CROSS CORRELATION ANALYSES AND POWER SPECTRAL COMPARISONS CAN THEN BE PERFORMED BY A GRADUATE STUDENT. THE STUDENT WILL THEN BE ASSISTED BY THE PI TO DRAW PHYSICAL INFERENCE FROM THE CORRELATIONS AND DRAFT A PUBLICATION. TO CARRY OUT THE INVESTIGATION DESCRIBED IN THIS PROPOSAL, WE ARE SUBMITTING THE ENCLOSED BUDGET. THIS NARRATIVE ACCOMPANIES A REQUEST TO TRANSFER THE FUNDS TO THE SCIENCE PI S NEW INSTITUTION, SOUTHERN METHODIST UNIVERSITY. PREVIOUSLY, PI SMITH WAS A POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW AT STANFORD UNIVERSITY (SMU), AND THE FINANCIAL PI WAS ROGER BLANDFORD PER THAT UNIVERSITY S RULES. AT SMU, SMITH WILL BE BOTH FINANCIAL AND SCIENCE PI.
