OPTICALLY-MODULATED MINIATURE MAGNETOMETER (OMMM). UNDER A NASA SBIR PHASE-II AWARD, POLATOMIC, INC. HAS DESIGNED A LASER FEMTO-TESLA MAGNETIC GRADIOMETER (LFMG). THE OPTICALLY-DRIVEN SPIN PRECESSION (OSP) TECHNOLOGY HAS THE POTENTIAL TO FURTHER IMPROVE THE PERFORMANCE OF LFMG. THE USE OF OSP TECHNIQUE WILL PERMIT THE ELIMINATION OF MAGNETIC PERTURBATION COILS THAT ARE LOCATED AROUND EACH HELIUM CELL IN THE MAGNETICALLY-DRIVEN SPIN PRECESSION (MSP) CONFIGURATION. GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER REQUIRES THE DESIGN, DEVELOPMENT, AND FABRICATION OF AN OPTICALLY-MODULATED MINIATURE MAGNETOMETER (OMMM) SPACE-BORNE INSTRUMENT THAT COMBINES BIAS FIELD NULLING (BFN) VECTOR FUNCTION WITH THE OSP SCALAR FUNCTION FOR SELF-CALIBRATION. THE PROTOTYPE OMMM INSTRUMENT SHALL BE CAPABLE OF MAKING OMNI-DIRECTIONAL, HIGH-SENSITIVITY, HIGH-PRECISION SCALAR AND VECTOR MEASUREMENTS OF MAGNETIC FIELDS. DELIVERABLES WILL INCLUDE ONE PROTOTYPE OMMM INSTRUMENT AND ONE USER MANUAL.
