IGF::OT::IGF THE CONTRACTOR SHALL PERFORM THE RESEARCH EFFORT AS DESCRIBED IN ITS PROPOSAL ENTITLED, "POLAR WINDS: AIRBORNE DOPPLER WIND LIDAR INVESTIGATIONS" DATED MAY 15, 2013. A TEAM OF SCIENTISTS WITH EXPERIENCE IN POLAR SCIENCE, AIRBORNE DOPPLER WIND LIDARS AND SPACE-BASED OBSERVATIONS OF CLOUDS AND AEROSOLS HAS BEEN FORMED TO DESIGN AN ARCTIC FIELD CAMPAIGN (WITH OPTIONS) WHERE AN AIRBORNE DOPPLER WIND LIDAR (ADWL) IS USED TO PRIMARILY TO VALIDATE NUMERICAL MODEL CHARACTERIZATIONS OF AIRFLOW OVER THE OPEN OCEANS AND ICE SHEETS, IN PARTICULAR WITHIN THE SHALLOW PBLS IN TRANSITION ZONES. IN ADDITION, THE AIRBORNE DWL WOULD BE OPERATED IN A FASHION APPROPRIATE FOR EXPLORING THE IMPORTANCE OF DYNAMIC FEATURES SUCH AS OLES AND ARCTIC LOW LEVEL JETS TO THE TRANSPORT OF HEAT AND ENERGY INTO THE REGION. FLIGHT PATTERNS WOULD ALSO BE DESIGNED TO VALIDATE THE MODIS AMVS AND CALIPSO OBSERVATIONS WHEN CLOUDS PREVENT THE LIDAR FROM MAKING HIGH QUALITY PBL MEASUREMENTS. NASA'S ICEBRIDGE PROJECT MAY BE USED AS THE DEFAULT TARGET OF THE PLANNED ADWL INVESTIGATIONS. HOWEVER, A MORE BROAD SET OF POLAR RESEARCH PROGRAMS AND ADWL FACILITIES WILL BE CONSIDERED IN ESTABLISHING BOTH SCIENCE GOALS AS WELL AS FIELD PROGRAM OPPORTUNITIES. IF SUCCESSFUL, NASA WILL HAVE IN HAND THE NECESSARY DETAILS TO LAUNCH AN ADWL FIELD CAMPAIGN THAT WILL DELIVER A UNIQUE SET OF HIGH SPATIAL/TEMPORAL RESOLUTION WIND PROFILES TO THE POLAR REGION MODELING AND PHYSICAL PROCESSES RESEARCH COMMUNITIES.
