NASA IS DEVELOPING A SYSTEM TO FILTER CABIN AIR, CONCENTRATE A STREAM OF LOW PRESSURE HIGH PURITY OXYGEN, COMPRESS THE OXYGEN WITH AN ON BOARD COMPRESSOR, AND STORE THE OXYGEN IN THE EXTERNAL HIGH PRESSURE OXYGEN STORAGE TANKS CALLED HPGTS (HIGH PRESSURE GAS TANKS). THE OXYGEN PURITY REQUIREMENT FOR USE IN THE EMU (EVA MOBILITY UNIT, COMMONLY KNOWN AS THE SPACE SUIT ) IS GREATER THAN 99.5% PURITY. THE DELIVERY RATE TARGET IS 5 LBS O2 PER DAY. THE TARGET FOOTPRINT FOR THE OXYGEN SEPARATION SYSTEM IS THAT THE FLIGHT SYSTEM FIT WITHIN AN ENVELOPE MEASURING 20 X 20 X 24 INCHES. THE TARGET POWER CONSUMPTION IS 750 WATTS. COMMERCIAL OXYGEN SEPARATION SYSTEMS ARE TARGETED AT HOME MEDICAL OXYGEN APPLICATIONS. THE OXYGEN PURITY REQUIREMENT FOR HOME MEDICAL OXYGEN IS GREATER THAN 93% O2. HOME MEDICAL SYSTEMS ARE DESIGNED IN A WAY THAT PREVENT THE OXYGEN PURITY FROM BEING GREATER THAN 96%. DEVELOPING A FLIGHT OXYGEN SEPARATION SYSTEM REQUIRES A FUNDAMENTALLY NEW DESIGN. THIS FIRST STEP IN THE DESIGN PROCESS IS TO IDENTIFY, AND DEVELOP A SORBENT CAPABLE OF ACHIEVING HIGH OXYGEN PURITY. THE SECOND STEP IS TO INTEGRATE THIS SORBENT INTO AN OCM (OXYGEN CONCENTRATION MODULE), CAPABLE OF MEETING PRODUCTION RATE AND PURITY REQUIREMENTS. THE THIRD STEP IS DESIGNING AND MANUFACTURING THE BALANCE OF PLANT (VALVES, CONTROLLERS, COMPRESSORS) AND MANUFACTURING AND PACKAGING THE SYSTEM CAPABLE OF MEETING FLIGHT THERMAL, STRUCTURAL, AND ELECTRICAL REQUIREMENTS. TDA RESEARCH, IN THE COURSE OF SBIR CONTRACT NNX09CE30P, HAS DEMONSTRATED THE ABILITY TO SELECT AND MANUFACTURE OXYGEN SORBENT THAT MEETS UNIQUE FLIGHT SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS (NOT HOME MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS). TDA HAS DEMONSTRATED THE ABILITY TO DESIGN AND MANUFACTURE AIR SEPARATION SYSTEMS TO UNIQUE SPECIFICATIONS. TDA HAS DEMONSTRATED THE ABILITY TO DESIGN, DEVELOP, AND MANUFACTURE FULL SCALE SYSTEMS CAPABLE OF MEETING FLIGHT REQUIREMENTS. THE INTENT OF THIS CONTRACT IS TO LEVERAGE THE OXYGEN SEPARATION TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPED IN THE COURSE OF NNX09CE30P, AND DETERMINE IF THIS CAPABILITY CAN BE APPLIED DEVELOP A COMPACT, SPACE RATED, HIGH PURITY OCM. THE FIRST STEP TOWARDS DEVELOPING THIS CAPABILITY IS SELECTING, MANUFACTURING, AND CHARACTERIZING THE APPROPRIATE OXYGEN SEPARATION SORBENT. IN THE COURSE OF NNJ10HD25P, TDA RESEARCH SUCCESSFULLY SELECTED A SORBENT (A SILVER EXCHANGED LITHIUM BASED TYPE X SORBENT), MANUFACTURED THE SORBENT IN SMALL (50 CC/BATCH) BATCHES, AND CHARACTERIZED THE SORBENT PERFORMANCE (O2/AR SEPARATION COEFFICIENT IS 1.20 AT 20 DEGREES C, 1.8 ATM).
