INTERNAL WIRELESS INSTRUMENTATION SYSTEM (IWIS) AND EXTERNAL WIRELESS INSTRUMENTATION SYSTEM (EWIS) HARDWARE ARE DEPLOYED, AND OPERATED ON THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION (ISS) TO COLLECT STRUCTURAL DYNAMIC DATA TO VALIDATE ISS MODELS. TO REDUCE CREW TIME AND FACILITATE MEASUREMENTS IN ALTERNATE LOCATIONS, ADDITIONAL IWIS AND EWIS HARDWARE IS REQUIRED. THIS SPECIFICATION DEFINES REQUIREMENTS FOR THE ADDITIONAL HARDWARE DELIVERABLES OF THE IWIS AND EWIS. THE ADDITIONAL IWIS HARDWARE WILL INCLUDE MODIFIED REMOTE SENSOR UNITS(RSUS), TRIAXIAL ACCELEROMETER ASSEMBLIES( TAAS), ACCELEROMETER CABLE ASSEMBLIES (ACAS), AND ACCELEROMETER INTERFACE PLATE ASSEMBLIES (AIPAS). THE RSU WILL BE MODIFIED TO EXCLUDE THE 8 CHANNEL STRAIN GAUGE MODULE. THE MODIFIED ASSEMBLY WILL HEREIN BE REFERRED TO AS THE MODIFIED IWIS RSU. ADDITIONAL MINOR MODIFICATIONS MAY INCLUDE THE REPLACEMENT OF ELECTRICAL, ELECTRONIC, AND ELECTROMECHANICAL COMPONENTS, WITH EQUIVALENT ALTERNATE PARTS TO ADDRESS OBSOLESCENCE ISSUES. EXCLUDING FEATURES AND CAPABILITIES ASSOCIATED WITH THE STRAIN GAUGE MODULE FORM, FIT, AND FUNCTION OF THE MODIFIED IWIS RSU WILL BE IDENTICAL TO THE UNMODIFIED RSU. THE EWIS HARDWARE ACQUIRED UNDER THIS EFFORT WIL L BE A SINGLE PART NO. WHICH IS COMPRISED OF CONFIGURATION ITEM NO. 684DE8A AND COMPUTER SOFTWARE CONFIGURATION ITEM NO. 684DF4A. WIRELESS INSTRUMENTATION SYSTEM OVERVIEW THE IWIS IS AN INTERNAL WIRELESS SYSTEM INTENDED TO AUGMENT PRIOR STRUCTURAL DYNAMIC PREDICTION CAPABILITIES BY PROVIDING THE ABILITY TO MONITOR THE ISS ASSEMBLY STRUCTURAL DYNAMIC (ASD) THROUGHOUT THE LIFE OF THE OSS. THE SYSTEM WAS DEVELOPED, AND THE ORIGINAL HARDWARE PROCURED UNDER NASA CONTRACT NO. NAS9-97146. WIRELESS MONITORING IS NECESSARY FOR THE ASD, BECAUSE REQUIRED DATA IS MEASURED FROM SEVERAL REMOTE LOCATIONS DISTRIBUTED THROUGH THE ASSEMBLED VEHICLE. THE SYSTEM CONSISTS OF A NUMBER OF RSUS MOUNTED IN THE ISS HABITABLE MODULES AND A NETWORK CONTROL UNIT CONNECTED TO THE SPACE SHUTTLE COMPUTER (SSC) LAPTOP. THE RSUS OBTAIN, AND STORE, STRAIN GAUGE DATA, ACCELEROMETER DATA, AND ACCELEROMETER TEMPERATURE DATA, FROM SENSORS MOUNTED IN THE HABITABLE MODULES. DATA FROM THE RSUS IS SENT VIA RADIO FREQUENCY TO THE NC, WHICH PROCESSES AND TRANSMITS THE DATA VIA INTERCONNECTING CABLE TO THE SSC. IWIS DATA IS DOWNLOADED FROM THE SSC VIA ORBITAL COMMUNICATIONS ADAPTER (OCA) FOR GROUND ANALYSIS. THE PURPOSE OF THE DATA ANALYSIS IS TO VALIDATE STRUCTURAL MODELS AND FORCING FUNCTIONS, AND IT ALLOWS FOR THE MONITORING OF MAJOR ASSEMBLY AND OPERATIONAL ACTIVITIES WHICH AIDS IN THE RESOLUTION OF POTENTIAL ANOMALIES.
