IGF::OT::IGF LASER DIODE (LD) SPECTROMETERS THAT MONITOR MAJOR CONSTITUENTS OF THE SPACECRAFT CABIN ATMOSPHERE HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED AS PART OF A PHASE II SBIR WITH VISTA PHOTONICS, INC. AND A FOLLOW ON PHASE III EFFORT. THE PHASE II CONTRACT (NNX10RA08C) BEGAN IN DECEMBER 2009 AND ENDED IN JUNE 2011. AT THE END OF THIS PROJECT, VISTA PHOTONICS, INC. DELIVERED TO NASA GLENN RESEARCH CENTER (GRC) TWO INSTRUMENTS THAT USE TUNABLE VERTICAL CAVITY SURFACE-EMITTING LASERS (VCSELS) TO MONITOR O2, CO2, AND WATER VAPOR USING AN INTEGRATING SPHERE DETECTOR CELL CONFIGURATION AND CO USING A MULTI-PASS ABSORPTION CELL WITH WAVELENGTH MODULATION. IN SPITE OF THIS ON-GOING PROJECT, RECENT PLANS TO EXTEND THE LIFE OF THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION (ISS) TO AT LEAST 2020 HAS PROMPTED NASA TO ACCELERATE THE DEVELOPMENT OF PROMISING NEW INSTRUMENTS THAT CAN MONITOR THE ISS HABITABLE ENVIRONMENT. PHASE III DEVELOPMENTS WERE EXECUTED UNDER NASA CONTRACT NNC11CA19C AND WYLE INTEGRATED SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING PURCHASE ORDERS T53185 AND T53751. THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO CAPITALIZE ON THE ADVANCES MADE DURING THE SBIR PHASE II CONTRACT, PHASE III CONTRACT AND PURCHASE ORDERS TO ACQUIRE A FLIGHT SUITABLE OPTICAL LIFE GAS ANALYZER (OLGA), A SINGLE, PORTABLE DEVICE THAT CAN DETECT MULTIPLE GASES CURRENTLY MEASURED ON ISS BY SEVERAL PORTABLE DEVICES (CDM, CSA-O2, DRAEGER TUBES). STATEMENT OF WORK 1. UPGRADE ELECTRONICS DESIGN TO SUPPORT OPERATION IN NANORACKS OLGA 4.0 ENCLOSURE VISTA PHOTONICS WILL REDESIGN THE PREVIOUSLY DEVELOPED OLGA ELECTRONICS FOR FLIGHT ROBUSTNESS AND COMPATIBILITY WITH THE 5 VDC AVAILABLE FROM NANORACKS ENCLOSURE. AN IMPROVED PRESSURE SENSOR AND RELATIVE HUMIDITY SENSOR WILL BE INTEGRATED INTO THE ELECTRONICS BOARD. THE ELECTRONICS WILL ALSO BE INTEGRATED WITH AN OUTSIDE SIGNAL TO ALLOW ORDERLY SHUTDOWN OF THE SYSTEM UNDER LOW VOLTAGE CONDITIONS. THE ELECTRONICS WILL BE DESIGNED FOR COMPATIBILITY WITH DESIRED SOFTWARE CAPABILITIES (E.G. A SOFT REBOOT CAPACITY COULD BE ADDED) IN CONSULTATION WITH THE PROJECT COTR. COMPONENTS FROM THIRD PARTY VENDORS WILL BE ORDERED. 2. CONSTRUCT AND TEST THE VCSEL-ISAS OXYGEN, CARBON DIOXIDE, WATER VAPOR AND AMMONIA INTEGRATED SENSOR ASSEMBLY NEW ELECTRONICS WILL BE ACQUIRED, ASSEMBLED AND TESTED. THE PRIMARY SET OF FOUR DISCRETE LASERS WILL BE WAVELENGTH AND POWER CALIBRATED AND QUALIFIED. A BACKUP SET OF LASER DEVICES WILL BE LIKEWISE QUALIFIED. THE OPTICAL AND ELECTRONIC SECTIONS WILL BE INTEGRATED, ASSEMBLED AND TESTED. THE ASSEMBLED SYSTEM WILL BE INITIALLY CALIBRATED AT VISTA PHOTONICS FACILITY WITH FOLLOW UP, MORE EXTENSIVE, CALIBRATION AT NASA JSC AND/OR NASA WSTF. 3. DEVELOP AND IMPLEMENT MORE SOPHISTICATED USB-BASED COMMUNICATIONS INTERFACE VISTA PHOTONICS WILL ACQUIRE A USB-BASED COMMUNICATIONS INTERFACE THAT IS COMPATIBLE WITH THE EXTANT OLGA MICROCONTROLLER AND WILL ALLOW DISCRETE DATA FILE TRANSFERS TO A WINDOWS PC ON ISS, APPEARING TO THE PC AS A THUMB DRIVE. THIS INTERFACE IS EXPECTED TO INCLUDE DATA FILE REDUNDANCY FOR INSURING DATA INTEGRITY. 4. SUPPORT SENSOR TESTING AT NASA-JSC AND ELSEWHERE WITH NANORACKS VISTA PHOTONICS WILL PARTICIPATE IN ALL REQUIRED TESTING OF THE INTEGRATED DEVICE ALONG WITH NANORACKS IN SUPPORT OF THE PROJECT COTR. VISTA PHOTONICS WILL DEMONSTRATE OPERATION OF THE OLGA 4.0 INSTRUMENT AND PROVIDE TRAINING TO DESIGNATED PERSONNEL AS NEEDED. 5. SUPPORT OLGA 4.0 PROJECT KICK-OFF MEETINGS, REVIEW MEETINGS AND PROVIDE POST-DELIVERY SERVICING A KICK-OFF MEETING AT VISTA PHOTONICS IS PLANNED FOR THE OLGA 4.0 PROJECT TO REVIEW THE SCHEDULE AND OBJECTIVES FOR THE HARDWARE DEVELOPMENT. IN ADDITION, SEVERAL TESTING VISITS AND REVIEW MEETINGS ARE ANTICIPATED TO BE HELD AT JSC DURING THE PROJECT. VISTA PHOTONICS WILL BE PREPARED TO PARTICIPATE IN MANAGEMENT REVIEWS DURING THIS PROJECT. VISTA PHOTONICS WILL REMAIN AVAILABLE FOR ITERATIVE TESTING, TROUBLE SHOOTING AND HARDWARE IMPROVEMENTS AFTER HARDWARE DELIVERY WHILE THE CONTRACT IS ACTIVE.
