IGF::OT::IGF NASA HAS BEEN TESTING DIDS ACCELEROMETER SENSOR UNITS THAT WERE RECONFIGURED FOR ULTRA LOW POWER OPERATION IN ORDER TO PERFORM LONG-TERM TESTING ABOARD BEAM. ONE OF THE TESTS HAS BEEN TO USE VARIOUS IDLE (LISTEN) RATES WHILE IN TRIGGER MODE. WHEN THE IDLE RATE IS INCREASED, THE TRIGGER THRESHOLD MUST BE INCREASED IN ORDER TO PREVENT CONTINUOUS TRIGGERING. INVOCON RESEARCHED THE BEHAVIOR AND HAS DESIGNED A SOFTWARE PATCH THAT MINIMIZES THIS BEHAVIOR. DUE TO THE LIMITED FUNDS PROVIDED FOR RESEARCHING THE BEHAVIOR, THE ROOT CAUSE WAS NOT COMPLETELY DETERMINED. HOWEVER, THE SOFTWARE PATCH DESIGNED BY INVOCON IMPROVED THE BEHAVIOR OF TWO GROUND UNITS BASED ON A LIKELY CAUSE THAT WAS HYPOTHESIZED DURING THE INVESTIGATION. THIS SOFTWARE PATCH MUST BE APPLIED TO THE FLIGHT UNITS IN ORDER FOR THEM TO BE MAXIMALLY USEFUL DURING THE BEAM EXPERIMENT. ADDITIONALLY, DURING NASA S TESTING OF THE DIDS SYSTEM, THE OPERATION OF SENSOR UNITS S/N 1122 HAS CHANGED. ORIGINALLY, ALL CHANNELS TRIGGERED NOMINALLY. HOWEVER, CHANNEL 1 NO LONGER CAUSES THE UNIT TO TRIGGER.INVOCON WILL REPROGRAM THE FIVE DIDS FLIGHT UNITS THAT NASA INTENDS TO USE IN THE BEAM EXPERIMENT. THIS EFFORT INCLUDES MINIMAL DOCUMENTATION THAT INVOCON USES INTERNALLY TO TRACK THE STATUS OF THE SENSOR UNITS. IT ALSO INCLUDES MINIMAL TESTING TO VERIFY IMPROVED FUNCTIONALITY OF THE UNITS. IN THE INTEREST OF MINIMIZING COST, NASA HAS NOT BEEN INTERESTED IN HAVING WRITTEN DOCUMENTATION FOR THIS TYPE OF ACTIVITY. THEREFORE, INVOCON WILL SUPPORT A ONE-HOUR TELECOM TO DISCUSS THE RESULTS OF THE REPROGRAMMING. IN THE EVENT THAT ONE OR MORE UNITS DO NOT PERFORM BETTER AS A RESULT OF THE SOFTWARE PATCH, INVOCON WILL NOTIFY NASA. AT THAT TIME, NASA AND INVOCON CAN DETERMINE WHETHER TO RETURN THE UNIT(S) AS-IS OR BEGIN A SEPARATE EFFORT TO DETERMINE THE ROOT CAUSE AND ADDITIONAL APPROACHES TO IMPROVE THE BEHAVIOR OF THE SENSOR UNITS. THE PROPOSED INVESTIGATION WILL INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING ACTIVITIES: 1) INVESTIGATE THE CAUSE OF THE NEW TRIGGER BEHAVIOR FOR DIDS S/N 1122 CHANNEL 1. 2) DETERMINE A METHOD TO RETURN THE TRIGGER TO NOMINAL OPERATION. 3) IMPLEMENT THE METHOD TO RETURN THE CHANNEL 1 TRIGGER TO NOMINAL OPERATION. 4) PERFORM A BASIC TEST TO DETERMINE THAT THE CHANNEL 1 TRIGGER OPERATES NOMINALLY. IN THE EVENT THAT THE INVESTIGATION AND MODIFICATION OF THE HARDWARE REQUIRE MORE EFFORT THAN PRESENTLY ESTIMATED BY INVOCON, INVOCON WILL NOTIFY NASA. AT THAT TIME, NASA AND INVOCON CAN DETERMINE WHETHER TO RETURN THE UNIT AS-IS OR BEGIN A SEPARATE EFFORT TO DETERMINE THE ROOT CAUSE AND ADDITIONAL APPROACHES TO IMPROVE THE BEHAVIOR OF THE SENSOR UNIT. DUE TO A BUDGET-CONSTRAINED ENVIRONMENT, THIS EFFORT DOES NOT INCLUDE THE EXTENSIVE TESTING OF THE UNIT THAT IS REQUIRED TO VERIFY COMPLETE FUNCTIONALITY OF THE SYSTEM. ALTHOUGH INVOCON BELIEVES THAT THE INVESTIGATION AND HANDLING OF THE HARDWARE DISCUSSED HEREIN PROVIDES MINIMAL RISK TO THE QUALITY AND OPERATION OF THE CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION FOR PROPOSAL EVALUATION PURPOSES ONLY INVOCON, INC., 19221 I-45 SOUTH, STE 530, CONROE, TX 77385 UNIT, IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE UNIT MIGHT STILL NOT COMPLETELY OPERATE AS DESIRED BY NASA. INVOCON IS WILLING TO WORK WITH NASA TO PROVIDE QUOTES FOR ANY ADDITIONAL INVESTIGATIONS AND MODIFICATIONS DESIRED BY NASA.
