INTEGRATING NASA DIGITAL EDUCATIONAL ASSETS (IDEA) THE INTEGRATING NASA DIGITAL EDUCATION ASSETS (IDEA) PROJECT PROPOSED BY THE NATIONAL SCIENCE TEACHERS ASSOCIATION (NSTA) WILL DEVELOP A TRANSFORMATIVE, SCALABLE MODEL AT THE SCHOOL DISTRICT LEVEL THAT IS DESIGNED TO SUSTAIN ELECTRONIC PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT (PD) FOR SCIENCE TEACHERS. THE COLLABORATION BETWEEN NSTA AND OKLAHOMA STATE UNIVERSITY (OSU) WILL LEVERAGE NSTAS PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CE FOUNDATION AND THEIR ONGOING STEM EDUCATION EFFORT IN THE NATION S SCHOOLS. THE PROJECT GOALS EMPHASIZE INCREASING TEACHER CONTENT KNOWLEDGE AND PEDAGOGICAL EFFECTIVENESS USING NASA MISSION-CENTRIC CONTENT AREAS IN EARTH AND SPACE SCIENCES. THE METHOD WILL BE A BLENDED ELECTRONIC DELIVER) OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT USING NASA CONTENT THAT HAS BEEN TIGHTLY) ALIGNED WITH DISTRICT CURRICULA AND STATE STANDARDS. TOOLS TO BE USED INCLUDE NASA-SPONSORED WEB SEMINARS AND ONLINE SHORT COURSES UTILIZING NASA-SPONSORED ONLINE TEACHER MODULES CALLED SCIPACKS/SCIENCE OBJECTS (SOS) AND EXISTING NASA CURRICULUM SUPPORT RESOURCES, WHICH WILL BE FINDABLE THROUGH THE NSTA LEARNING CENTER FOR THE PARTNERING SCHOOL DISTRICTS. OSU WILL OFFER GRADUATE CREDIT FOR PARTICIPANTS. IN RECENT YEARS, MULTIPLE STUDIES, EXPERT PANELS AND REPORTS HAVE REPEATEDLY DECRIED THE STATE OF SCIENCE LITERACY IN THE UNITED STATES. REPORTS FROM EMINENT STUDY GROUPS LIKE THE GLENN COMMISSION AND THE NATIONAL ACADEMIES WARN US OF THE NATIONS SLIPPING STATURE AMONG OTHER TECHNOLOGY-DRIVEN NATIONS, WANING INTEREST AMONG STUDENTS IN STEM-RELATED CAREERS AND OUR OVERALL FAILURE TO FULLY PREPARE AND SUPPORT THE TARGET AUDIENCE OF THE PROPOSED NSTA-OSU PROJECT, THAT IS, THE NATIONS TEACHERS OF SCIENCE. TEACHERS NEED EFFECTIVE, EFFICIENT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT THAT IS ON-GOING, INQUIRY-BASED, LEVERAGES TECHNOLOGY AND INCLUDES A FOCUS ON INCREASED SCIENCE CONTENT KNOWLEDGE, AS WELL AS ON-DEMAND INTERACTIVE CLASSROOM RESOURCES TO HELP THEIR STUDENTS EXCEL IN STEM-RELATED SUBJECTS. THE PROPOSED PROJECT IS DESIGNED TO HELP SUPPORT A BROADER, MUCH-NEEDED TRANSFORMATIVE MODEL OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, A PROFOUND CHANGE IN THE WAY WE PROVIDE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT TO THE NATION S TWO MILLION TEACHERS OF SCIENCE. THE CHALLENGE OF BUILDING A TRANSFORMATIVE PD MODEL FACES SEVERAL CONSTRAINTS. ON THE ONE HAND, EMPIRICAL RESEARCH ESPOUSES SPECIFIC ATTRIBUTES OF EFFECTIVE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, SUCH AS INTERACTIVE PERSONALIZED LEARNING FOR EDUCATOR AND STUDENT. ON THE OTHER HAND, IT IS CRUCIAL TO REACH A SIGNIFICANT NUMBER OF TEACHERS TO HAVE A MEANINGFUL IMPACT ON THE NATION S CAPABILITIES IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY. MANY IN THE PROFESSIONAL STAFF DEVELOPMENT, E-LEARNING AND INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY COMMUNITIES STRESS THE BENEFITS OF PROVIDING A BLENDED APPROACH TO PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT THAT COMBINES BOTH FACE-TO-FACE AND ONLINE OPPORTUNITIES FOR LEARNING. THE IDEA PROJECT WILL DRAW FROM THE BEST OF BOTH IN ITS DELIVERY OF NASA SCIENCE CONTENT TO TEACHERS. PROJECT RESOURCES WILL SHOWCASE NASA RESEARCH IN EARTH AND SPACE SCIENCES, FOCUSING ON CONTENT AREAS SUCH AS EARTH, SUN & MOON AND THE SOLAR SYSTEM. EXISTING NASA-SPONSORED RESOURCES WILL BE LEVERAGED SPECIFICALLY THE ONLINE SCIPACKS/SOS, AS WELL AS WEB SEMINAR ARCHIVES ALREADY PRODUCED USING NASA STANDARDS-ALIGNED CONTENT FOR ON-DEMAND E-PD. WEB SEMINARS WILL BE REPURPOSED INTO SMALLER PODCASTS AND THE SCIPACKS/SOS WILL BE AGGREGATED INTO COURSE MATERIAL FOR NEW MODERATED ONLINE SHORT COURSES. ADDITIONALLY, A SUITE OF NEW OPPORTUNITIES WHICH INCLUDES LIVE WEB SEMINARS AND PODCASTS WILL BE CREATED, BUNDLED AND ALIGNED WITH SELECTED NASA CURRICULUM SUPPORT RESOURCES. IN PARTNERSHIP WITH IDENTIFIED NASA PERSONNEL, CE FOUNDATION PERSONNEL AND MOST IMPORTANTLY SCIENCE SUPERVISORS FROM THE SIX CE DISTRICTS, WE WILL IDENTIFY AND MAP POTENTIAL RESOURCES FROM THE LIST OF APPROXIMATELY 1,500 THAT ARE TAGGED AT EDUCATION.NASA.GOV FOR TEACHERS IN THE MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL GRADE LEVELS.
