THE NASA-DEVELOPED OFFSHORE MEMBRANE ENCLOSURE FOR GROWING ALGAE (OMEGA) IS A NOVEL PHOTOBIOREACTOR (PBR) SYSTEM DESIGNED TO GROW MICROALGAE IN BAGS THAT FLOAT IN THE OCEAN. AFTER AN INCUBATION PERIOD OF L0-20 DAYS, THE MICROALGAL BIOMASS IS COLLECTED BY BARGS AND RETURNED TO LAND FOR FURTHER PROCESSING. THE MATERIAL RECOVERED FROM OMEGA CONTAINS LARGE PROPORTIONS OF WATER. THIS RESEARCH WILL DESIGN AN EFFICIENT, BARGE- MOUNTED ELECTROCHEMICAL MICROALGAE HARVESTING SYSTEM THAT WILL CONCENTRATE THE BIOMASS AT SEA. THIS WILL INCREASE THE AMOUNT OF BIOMASS COLLECTED PER BARGE LOAD, REDUCE DOWNSTREAM PROCESSING AND INCREASE THE EFFICIENCY OF THE OMEGA PROCESS.
