WE PROPOSE TO MEASURE THE ABUNDANCE, STRUCTURAL DISTRIBUTION, EE, AND ISOTOPIC COMPOSITION OF HYDROXY ACIDS IN A RANGE OF CM AND CR CARBONACEOUS CHONDRITES SPANNING AQUEOUS ALTERATION STATES FROM 1 TO 3. PREVIOUS ANALYSES OF THE AMINO ACID CONTENT OF THESE METEORITES (ELSILA ET AL., 2012; GLAVIN ET AL., 2010; GLAVIN AND DWORKIN, 2009) MAKE POSSIBLE A DIRECT COMPARISON OF HYDROXY AND AMINO ACIDS. THE RESULTS OF OUR WORK WILL CONSTRAIN THE TIMING AND LOCATION OF THE CHIRAL FORCE THAT LEADS TO EE OF METEORITIC AMINO AND HYDROXY ACIDS, IMPROVING OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE ORIGINS OF HOMOCHIRALITY, A CRITICAL STEP IN THE ORIGIN OF LIFE. AS SUCH THIS PROPOSAL ADDRESSES CONCEPTS RELATED TO BOTH THE PLANETARY CONDITIONS FOR LIFE AND PREBIOTIC EVOLUTION COMPONENTS OF THE ASTROBIOLOGY: EXOBIOLOGY AND EVOLUTIONARY BIOLOGY PROGRAM.
