THE NICER MISSION, IN PREPARATION FOR LAUNCH IN EARLY 2017, WISHES TO ENGAGE ITS APPROVED COINVESTIGATORS FOR PLANNING OF CALIBRATION AND ASTROPHYSICAL OBSERVATIONS, ANALYSIS OF SCIENTIFIC DATA, AND PUBLICATION OF RESULTS IN SUPPORT OF THE MISSIONS KEY SCIENCE OBJECTIVES. XXX OF THE NATIONAL RADIO ASTRONOMY OBSERVATORY/AUI IS A MEMBER OF THE NICER SCIENCE TEAM WHO CONTRIBUTED TO THE FORMULATION OF, AND WAS NAMED IN, THE NICER STEP 1 AND CONCEPT STUDY REPORT (STEP 2) PROPOSALS TO NASAS ASTROPHYSICS EXPLORERS PROGRAM, AND AS SUCH WAS APPROVED FOR FUNDED PARTICIPATION IN THE MISSION THROUGH THE NICER SELECTION LETTER OF 5 APRIL, 2013. XXX IS AN EXPERT IN THE FIELD OF NEUTRON STAR ASTROPHYSICS. IN CONSIDERATION OF GRANT FUNDING FROM THE NICER PROJECT, XXX WILL PARTICIPATE IN THE NICER SCIENCE TEAM AS A FULL MEMBER, WORKING WITHIN ONE OR MORE TOPICAL WORKING GROUPS. XXX SHALL CONTRIBUTE TO THE NICER MISSION IN THE FOLLOWING WAYS. IN THE AREA OF PLANNING, XXX WILL: IDENTIFY CANDIDATE ASTROPHYSICAL TARGETS FOR PULSATION SEARCHES AND HIGH PRECISION PULSE TIMING INVESTIGATIONS WITH NICER PARTICIPATE IN THE SCIENCE TEAMS SELECTION OF OTHER SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATIONS TO BE PURSUED AND PUBLISHED; ESTIMATE EXPOSURE TIMES, OBSERVING CADENCES, AND OTHER STRATEGIES FOR OPTIMIZING THE SCIENTIFIC RETURN OF NICERS VARIOUS INVESTIGATIONS AND TARGETS; PROVIDE INPUT ON REQUIRED SIGNAL TO NOISE RATIOS, PERMISSIBLE BACKGROUND NOISE LEVELS, AND CALIBRATION NEEDS SUCH AS KNOWLEDGE OF BACKGROUND LEVELS, INSTRUMENT THROUGHPUT AS A FUNCTION OF PHOTON ENERGY, AND ENERGY RESOLUTION, FOR ACHIEVING NICERS SCIENCE OBJECTIVES; DOCUMENT HIS WORK THROUGH PUBLIC AND INTERNAL REPORTS SUCH AS WHITE PAPERS AND BRIEF PROPOSALS TO FELLOW SCIENCE TEAM MEMBERS. IN THE AREA OF ANALYSIS, XXX WILL: SIMULATE NICER OBSERVATIONS AND DATA ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES, SUCH AS SINGLE PHOTON TIMING FITS AND LOW COUNTRATE PERIODICITY SEARCH METHODS, TO ASSESS EFFECTIVENESS AND RELEVANCE IMPROVE, TAILOR, OR DEVELOP SOFTWARE TOOLS FOR NICER DATA ANALYSIS, AS NEEDED PERFORM TIMING AND SPECTRAL STUDIES OF PHENOMENA ARISING FROM NEUTRON STAR SYSTEMS INCLUDING ROTATION AND ACCRETION POWERED PULSATIONS, RELATIVISTIC EFFECTS IN BINARY SYSTEMS, ROTATIONAL CLOCK STABILITIES, AND OTHERS. IN THE AREA OF PUBLICATION, XXX WILL: CONNECT NICER PULSATION SEARCH AND TIMING MEASUREMENTS TO BROADER ASTROPHYSICAL QUESTIONS OF NEUTRON STAR STRUCTURE, DYNAMICS, ENERGETICS, AND DEMOGRAPHICS LEAD OR CO AUTHOR NICER SCIENTIFIC PUBLICATIONS PRESENT NICER RESULTS AT CONFERENCES. THIS WORK WILL BE CARRIED OUT IN CONSULTATION WITH NICERS PI AND SCIENCE LEAD, AS A FULLY COLLABORATIVE EFFORT WITHIN THE SCIENCE TEAM AND WORKING GROUPS, AND IN CONFORMANCE WITH THE POLICIES FOR DATA ACCESS AND PUBLICATION ESTABLISHED BY THE NICER PROJECT AND SCIENCE TEAM MEMBERSHIP. XXX WILL PARTICIPATE IN WORKING GROUP AND SCIENCE TEAM TELECONS (TYPICALLY WEEKLY TO MONTHLY) AND IN PERSON MEETINGS (TYPICALLY TWICE ANNUALLY). THE INTENDED PERIOD OF PERFORMANCE FOR THIS EFFORT BEGINS IN JUNE 2016 AND EXTENDS THROUGH THE 18 MONTH BASELINE MISSION DURATION ON ORBIT ENDING IN SEPTEMBER 2018. THE COST PROPOSAL RESPONSIVE TO THIS STATEMENT OF WORK SHOULD SEPARATELY BUDGET AN INITIAL 10 MONTH PERIOD (NICER PHASE D) AND A SUBSEQUENT 18 MONTH PERIOD (NICER PHASE E).
