THIS STTR PHASE II PROPOSAL WILL BUILD UPON THE PHASE I ACCOMPLISHMENTS TOWARDS DEVELOPMENT OF A TEST SYSTEM BASED ON NMR RELAXOMETRY FOR LOCAL, SPATIALLY RESOLVED EVALUATION OF THE STRUCTURE AND PROPERTIES OF POLYMER-INORGANIC INTERFACES. THIS TEST SYSTEM WILL BE RELIABLE, STABLE AND EXPEDIENT, WITH CAPABILITIES FOR NONDESTRUCTIVE, REAL-TIME MONITORING OF THE EVOLUTION OF THE INTERFACE STRUCTURE AND PROPERTIES DURING CURING AND UNDER AGING EFFECTS. THE SYSTEM WILL ALSO BE CAPABLE OF DETECTING AND QUANTIFYING INTERFACIAL DEFECTS, RESIDUAL STRESSES, AND TRANSPORT AND STATE OF MOISTURE AT THE INTERFACE. DEPTH PROFILING AND THE POTENTIAL FOR 3D IMAGING WILL ALSO BE AMONG THE FEATURES TO BE PROVIDED BY THE SYSTEM. NMR RELAXOMETRY WILL MAKE THESE CAPABILITIES AVAILABLE FOR NONDESTRUCTIVE CONDITION ASSESSMENT AND QUALITY CONTROL OF POLYMERS AND COMPOSITES. ADDITIONALLY, THE FIRM HAS FORMED A PARTNERSHIP WITH MAGRITEK FOR TRANSITION OF AN INTEGRATED NMR RELAXOMETRY INSTRUMENT TO MARKETS FOR NONDESTRUCTIVE CONDITION ASSESSMENT AND QUALITY CONTROL OF POLYMER-INORGANIC INTERFACES, BULK POLYMERS, AND COMPOSITES. MAGRITEK MADE SIGNIFICANT IN-KIND CONTRIBUTIONS TOWARDS IMPLEMENTATION OF THE PHASE I PROJECT, AND WILL CONTINUE TO BE ACTIVELY INVOLVED IN THE PHASE II DEVELOPMENT WORK AND FOLLOW-UP COMMERCIALIZATION EFFORTS.
