| MORE THAN THREE HUNDRED PLANETS HAVE BEEN FOUND TO DATE AROUND OTHERS STARS LIKE THE SUN. THE VAST MAJORITY ARE GAS GIANTS LIKE JUPITER. THE PURSUIT OF PLANETS MORE LIKE THE EARTH HAS LED THE SEARCH TO M DWARF STARS MUCH LESS MASSIVE THAN THE SUN BECAUSE SMALLER PLANETS ARE MORE DETECTABLE AROUND SUCH STARS, AND THEY ARE MORE LIKELY TO ORBIT WITHIN A CIRCUMSTELLAR "HABITABLE ZONE". WE PROPOSE TO CARRY OUT A SEARCH FOR SHORT-PERIOD PLANETS AROUND A SET OF RECENTLY CATALOGED, NEARBY LATE K AND EARLY M DWARF STARS, BUILDING ON THE SUCCESS OF A SEARCH FOR "HOT" NEPTUNE-MASS PLANETS AROUND SOLAR-TYPE STARS. OUR NEW STRATEGY WILL COMBINE THE TWO PRINCIPAL SEARCH TECHNIQUES, DOPPLER RADIAL VELOCITY MEASUREMENTS AND TRANSIT DETECTION, TO EFFICIENTLY SEARCH FOR SHORT-PERIOD AND TRANSITING PLANETS. SUITABLE TARGET STARS WILL BE SURVEY WITH FOUR DOPPLER MEASUREMENTS TO IDENTIFY STARS WITH VARYING RADIAL VELOCITY AS CANDIDATE PLANETARY SYSTEMS AND SCREEN SPECTROSCOPIC BINARIES, AND THESE WILL BE IMMEDIATELY AND INTENSELY MONITORED BY PHOTOMETRIC OBSERVATIONS FOR TRANSITS. POTENTIAL TRANSITING SYSTEMS WILL BE FURTHER STUDIED WITH ADDITIONAL DOPPLER MEASUREMENTS AND PHOTOMETRY TO CONFIRM PLANETS. | JOINT MULTIWAVELENGTH MEASUREMENTS OF THE MATTER DISTRIBUTION IN CLUSTERS OF GALAXIES WE PROPOSE TO MAKE A COMPREHENSIVE DETERMINATION OF THE BARYONIC AND DARK MATTER DISTRIBUTION IN CLUSTERS OF GALAXIES USING A NEW METHODOLOGY DEVELOPED BY US. USING OUR TECHNIQUE IS IT POSSIBLE TO COMBINE ALL AVAILABLE MULTIWAVELENGTH DATA FOR A CLUSTER INTO A SINGLE JOINT ANALYSIS INVOLVING X-RAY HYDROSTATICS, WEAK GRAVITATIONAL LENSING, STELLAR DYNAMICS, AND THE SUNYAEV-ZEL'DOVICH EFFECT. THIS COMBINATION REPRESENTS AN IMPROVEMENT OVER EXISTING METHODS, AND CAN PROVIDE POWERFUL OBSERVATIONAL CONSTRAINTS ON THE DARK MATTER HALO SLOPE AND CONCENTRATION. WE HAVE MARSHALLED DATA FROM X-RAY OBSERVATORIES (CHANDRA, XMM-NEWTON), AS WELL AS FROM GROUND BASED OPTICAL AND RADIO FACILITIES, TO ASSEMBLE A REPRESENTATIVE SAMPLE OF 50 CLUSTERS SUITABLE FOR TESTING THE DETAILED PREDICTIONS OF CDM AND GAS SIMULATIONS. OUR FIRST GOALS ARE TO MEASURE THE LOGARITHMIC SLOPE OF THE DARK MATTER PROFILE TO AN ACCURACY OF +/- 0.2, AND TO MEASURE ITS CONCENTRATION TO AN ACCURACY OF 20%, FOR THE RELAXED CLUSTERS IN THE SAMPLE. WE ARE UNIQUE AMONG LARGE MULTIWAVELENGTH SURVEYS IN ATTEMPTING SUCH CONSTRAINTS USING ALL AVAILABLE DATA. TO COMPLEMENT THESE NEW LIMITS ON DARK MATTER PROPERTIES, WE WILL ALSO DEVELOP AND APPLY TRIAXIAL HYDROSTATIC MODELS TO THE RELAXED CLUSTERS IN OUR SAMPLE, AND MEASURE THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE LEVEL SUBSTRUCTURE AND DEVIATIONS FROM SELF-SIMILARITY. THE PHYSICS CODE USED FOR THIS PROJECT WILL BE MADE PUBLICLY AVAILABLE TO THE BROADER SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITY FOR FREE USE. THIS WILL PROVE TO BE AN INVALUABLE TOOL FOR THE ANALYSIS OF UPCOMING SPACE-BASED (CLASH) AND GROUND-BASED WEAK GRAVITATIONAL LENSING SURVEYS. AIRCRAFT ONBOARD DATA ACCESS (E.G., VIA ADS-B, GPS, DATA-LINK, CDTI) WILL ALLOW SELF-SEPARATION CAPABILITY, AND VIRTUALLY ALL-WEATHER OPERATIONS. WHEN AIRCRAFT ARE SO EQUIPPED, AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLERS WILL ASSUME THE ROLE OF 'MONITORS' OR 'SERVICE PROVIDERS' RATHER THAN ACTIVE CONTROLLERS. "INTELLIGENT DECISION SUPPORT" SYSTEMS WILL BE USED TO MANAGE INFORMATION OVERLOAD. | THE RECENT DETECTION OF OH ON THE LUNAR SURFACE AND WATER-ICE IN A SHADOWED CRATER MOTIVATE THE CURRENT LABORATORY STUDY THAT AIMS TO INCREASE OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE ORIGIN OF THIS SIGNAL. LABORATORY STUDIES OF PROTON AND DEUTERON IMPLANTATION INTO TERRESTRIAL MINERALS OR GLASSES SUPPORT THE SOLAR WIND HYPOTHESIS. HOWEVER, NONE OF THE STUDIES TO DATE HAVE USED LUNAR SOILS AS TARGETS FOR ION IMPLANTATION STUDIES. THE USE OF LUNAR SOIL IS IMPORTANT TO PROVIDE MID-IR SPECTRA THAT ARE DIRECTLY COMPARABLE TO THE REMOTE SENSING RESULTS. IN ADDITION, LABORATORY STUDIES HAVE THE ADVANTAGE THAT THE ENTIRE SPECTRAL WINDOW OF INTEREST MAY BE EXAMINED IN DETAIL. THUS, COMBINATION AND OVERTONE BANDS MIGHT BE OBSERVED IN ADDITION TO THE STRONGER FUNDAMENTALS. THESE BANDS WOULD UNIQUELY IDENTIFY WATER IF IT IS FORMED, AND WOULD ALSO PROVIDE SPECTRAL BANDS TO AID IN THE DECONVOLUTION OF DATA ACQUIRED FROM THE MOON OR OTHER AIRLESS BODIES. THE GOALS OF THIS STUDY ARE THREE-FOLD.
