THE CLOSED LOOP, LOW COST PLSS SYSTEM PROPOSED INCLUDES ALL THE REQUIRED SYSTEMS FOR A GENERIC EVA SETUP, AND CAN BE PACKAGED EFFECTIVELY FOR OUTER SPACE BASED APPLICATIONS. THE USE OF COTS ITEMS WITH A MINIMUM AMOUNT OF ORIGINAL PARTS GREATLY REDUCES UNIT AND DEVELOPMENT COSTS WHILE MAINTAINING A SAFE AND EFFECTIVE MEANS OF LIFE SUPPORT. THE LOW COST PLSS CAN BE DESIGNED FOR MINIMAL USE , SUCH THAT IT IS UTILIZED IN SPACE AND DISCARDED ON RE-ENTRY, RATHER THAN RETURNED FOR MAINTENANCE AND SERVICING, WHICH REPRESENTS A MAJOR DESIGN AND OPERATIONAL COST BARRIER FOR CURRENT SYSTEMS. THE LOW COST PLSS IS DESIGNED AND INTENDED TO BE ABLE TO BE USED WITH CURRENT SPACE SUIT ENCLOSURE SYSTEMS. THE LOW COST PLSS IS BROKEN INTO THREE MAJOR SYSTEMS AS DESCRIBED ABOVE: THE VENTILATION SYSTEM, THE THERMAL CONTROL SYSTEM, AND THE ELECTRONICS AND CONTROLS SYSTEM. IN ADDITION, THIS JOINT HAS A FOCUSED POINT OF ROTATION, LIKE THE HUMAN SHOULDER. THEIR DESIGN REDUCES DISCOMFORT FROM GATHERING OF FABRIC IN THE ARMPIT, PROVIDES A LARGE ROM, FAVORABLE TORQUE, AND ALLOWS FOR CLOSE TRACKING OF NATURAL HUMAN ANTHROPOMETRY. IN ADDITION, FFD'S ELBOW JOINT DESIGN SHOW CONSISTENTLY HIGH PERFORMANCE, IN TERMS OF ROM, TORQUE, AND OPERATING PRESSURE. THE HUMAN HAND DEMANDS A COMPLEX RANGE OF MOTIONS, A CLOSE FIT, AN EASE OF MOVEMENT, AND A LACK OF BULK THAT IS AT ODDS WITH THE ENGINEERING AND DURABILITY REQUIREMENTS OF AN INFLATED SAFETY GARMENT. WHILE PRECISION MOTIONS OF THE FINGERS ARE RELATIVELY WELL MET BY NASA'S CURRENT I.L.C./PHASE VI GLOVES, THE TORQUE REQUIRED FOR MORE GROSS POWER GRIPS SUCH AS TRANSLATING ALONG BARS OR GRASPING TOOLS IS SIGNIFICANT. THIS TORQUE COMES NOT FROM THE INDIVIDUAL FINGERS OR PHALANGE-PHALANGE JOINTS, BUT AT THE JOINT BETWEEN THE FINGERS AND THE PALM, OR THE METACARPAL-PHALANGEAL JOINT. IN ADDITION, THIS MOTION IS DIFFICULT TO PRECISELY MEASURE. THE HUMAN HAND IS CAPABLE OF OMNI-DIRECTIONAL MULTIFACETED MOVEMENTS THAT ARE CHALLENGING TO MIMIC ROBOTICALLY.
