NIGER HAS GREAT DEMANDS OF GROUNDWATER FOR MUNICIPAL USES AND IRRIGATION FOR SUSTAINABLE FOOD PRODUCTION. WHILE DECADAL EFFORTS OF GROUNDWATER DATA COLLECTION HAVE BEEN MADE IN THE PAST, THE DATA DISTRIBUTIONS ARE GEOGRAPHICALLY SCATTERED AND TEMPORALLY SPORADIC. THE DEPARTMENT OF HYDRAULICS IN NIGER PROVIDED THE TEAM OF MERCY CORPS AND NASA WITH IN-SITU GROUNDWATER DEPTH DATA IN FIVE REGIONS (AGADEZ, DIFFA, DOSSO, MARADI, AND ZINDER) COLLECTED FROM 1975 TO 2012. THE NORTHERN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICAN (NSSA) REGION, EXTENDING FROM THE SOUTHERN FRINGES OF THE SAHARA TO THE EQUATOR, AND STRETCHING WEST TO EAST FROM THE ATLANTIC TO THE INDIAN OCEAN COASTS, PLAYS A PROMINENT ROLE IN THE GENESIS OF GLOBAL ATMOSPHERIC CIRCULATION AND THE BIRTH OF SUCH MAJOR (AND OFTEN CATASTROPHIC) EVENTS AS HURRICANES AND THE DISTRIBUTION OF THE SAHARAN DUST TO OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD. THEREFORE, THIS NSSA REGION REPRESENTS A CRITICAL VARIABLE IN THE GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE EQUATION. RECENT SATELLITE-BASED STUDIES HAVE REVEALED THAT THE NSSA REGION HAS ONE OF THE HIGHEST BIOMASS-BURNING RATES PER UNIT LAND AREA AMONG ALL REGIONS OF THE WORLD. BECAUSE OF THE HIGH CONCENTRATION AND FREQUENCY OF FIRES IN THIS REGION, WITH THE ASSOCIATED ABUNDANCE OF HEAT RELEASE AND GASEOUS AND PARTICULATE SMOKE EMISSIONS, BIOMASS-BURNING ACTIVITY IS BELIEVED TO BE AN IMPORTANT MODULATOR OF THE REGIONAL CARBON, ENERGY, AND WATER CYCLES. ALTHOUGH THE RAINY SEASON IN THE NSSA REGION IS FROM APRIL TO SEPTEMBER WHEREAS BIOMASS BURNING OCCURS MAINLY DURING THE DRY SEASON (OCTOBER TO MARCH), OUR INITIAL RESULTS SHOW THAT THESE TWO PHENOMENA MAY BE INDIRECTLY COUPLED TO EACH OTHER THROUGH A CHAIN OF COMPLEX PROCESSES AND CONDITIONS, INCLUDING LAND-COVER AND SURFACE-ALBEDO CHANGES, THE CARBON CYCLE, EVAPOTRANSPIRATION, SOIL MOISTURE, SURFACE WATER RUNOFF, GROUND WATER RECHARGE, AND VARIABILITY IN ATMOSPHERIC COMPOSITION, DIABATIC HEATING, AS WELL AS MESOSCALE AND GENERAL CIRCULATIONS; THE COMBINED EFFECTS OF WHICH CAN LEAD TO DROUGHT, DESERTIFICATION, OR SEVERE WEATHER PHENOMENA. THESE PHENOMENA AND THEIR LINKAGES ARE CURRENTLY BEING QUANTIFIED IN OUR ONGOING INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH EFFORT IN THE NSSA REGION. WE PROPOSE THE REINFORCEMENT AND AMPLIFICATION OF OUR EFFORT IN ORDER TO MORE COMPREHENSIVELY ADDRESS THE EFFECTS OF THE INTENSE BIOMASS BURNING OBSERVED FROM SATELLITE YEAR AFTER YEAR ACROSS THE NSSA REGION ON THE RAPID DEPLETION OF THE REGIONAL WATER RESOURCES, AS EXEMPLIFIED BY THE DRAMATIC DRYING OF LAKE CHAD. THIS PROPOSAL BRINGS TOGETHER A MULTI-DISCIPLINARY TEAM OF SCIENTISTS FROM DIFFERENT BUT COMPLIMENTARY FIELDS OF EXPERTISE CONDUCTING AN INTEGRATED STUDY THAT IS REVEALING THE COUPLING OF THE AFORESAID PHENOMENA AND ASSOCIATED PROCESSES AND OUTCOMES. WE WILL QUANTIFY THE LEVEL OF STAR FORMATION AND NUCLEAR BLACK HOLE GROWTH (AGN) ACTIVITY THAT IS BOTH OBSCURED BY DUST AND UNOBSCURED IN THESE IMPORTANT EVOLUTIONARY SYSTEMS AS FUNCTIONS OF MERGER STAGE (PROJECTED SEPARATION, VELOCITY DIFFERENCE), MERGER PROPERTIES (MASS RATIO, PROGENITOR MORPHOLOGY), AND MERGER ENVIRONMENT (HOST HALO MASS, HALO-CENTRIC DISTANCE).
