GEOPHYSICAL DATA HAVE BEEN COLLECTED AT SEVERAL, SOUTHERN GREENLAND ICE SHEET SITES OVER A 30 YEAR PERIOD. THE SITES WERE INITIALLY ESTABLISHED BY THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY IN 1980 AND HAVE BEEN REOCCUPIED THROUGH 2005. CONTRARY TO OBSERVATIONS OF SUBSTANTIAL THINNING IN COASTAL AREAS, IN SITU DOPPLER SATELLITE AND GPS MEASUREMENTS REVEAL INCREASING ICE SHEET ELEVATION AT THE CENTRAL SITE. THESE OBSERVATIONS ARE CONSISTENT WITH INDEPENDENT AIRBORNE TOPOGRAPHIC MAPPER DATA AND MEASUREMENTS OF DECREASING VALUES OF ABSOLUTE GRAVITY. HOWEVER, REPEAT MEASUREMENTS OF SURFACE VELOCITY DEMONSTRATE THAT THE SURFACE VELOCITY AT THIS LOCATION ON THE INTERIOR ICE SHEET IS INCREASING. THE VELOCITY OBSERVATION MAY BE EVIDENCE THAT PROCESSES CAUSING THE MARGINS OF THE ICE SHEET TO THIN MAY NOW BE HAVING AN EFFECT ON THE INTERIOR ICE SHEET. WHILE A PORTION OF THE IN SITU DATA HAVE BEEN ANALYZED AND REPORTED UPON, ADDITIONAL DATA REMAIN TO BE REDUCED AND DOCUMENTED AS PART OF THE ARCHIVAL RECORD OF ICE SHEET OBSERVATIONS. WORK TO BE COMPLETED UNDER THIS PROPOSAL WILL INCLUDE ANALYSIS OF ALL REMAINING 2003-2005 DATA COLLECTED AT BOTH THE WESTERN AND CENTRAL OSU SITES. THE ELEVATION TIME SERIES WILL BE EXTENDED AS POSSIBLE BY INCORPORATING ICESAT DATA THROUGH TO END-OF-MISSION. WE PROPOSE TO INVESTIGATE THE DYNAMIC RESPONSE OF THE INTERIOR GREENLAND ICE SHEET TO RECENT RETREAT AND ACCELERATION OF COASTAL OUTLET GLACIERS WITH THE OBJECTIVE OF IMPROVING PREDICTIONS OF THE CONTRIBUTION OF THE ICE SHEET TO SEA LEVEL RISE. OUR APPROACH INTEGRATES OBSERVATIONS FROM REMOTE SENSING, FIELD MEASUREMENTS AND NUMERICAL ICE-FLOW MODELING. USING MULTIPLE SOURCES OF REPEAT-ALTIMETER DATA AND SUPPORTING SURFACE ACCUMULATION AND FIRN COMPACTION RATE MODEL OUTPUT, WE WILL CONSTRUCT ANNUAL, ICE SHEET-WIDE MAPS OF ICE THINNING DUE TO CHANGES IN FLOW DYNAMICS (I.E. DYNAMIC THINNING). REMOTE-SENSING DERIVED MAPS WILL BE AUGMENTED WITH FIELD-DERIVED MEASUREMENTS OF DYNAMIC THINNING, FIRN COMPACTION AND SURFACE ACCUMULATION FROM THE CATCHMENTS OF TWO RAPIDLY-CHANGING OUTLET GLACIERS (JAKOBSHAVN AND KANGERDLUGSSUAQ). FIELD OBSERVATIONS WILL ALSO BE USED TO ASSESS THE ABILITY OF AIR AND SPACEBORNE REPEAT-ALTIMETRY TO RESOLVE DYNAMIC THINNING. REMOTE SENSING AND FIELD OBSERVATIONS WILL BE USED TO CONSTRAIN A NUMERICAL ICE FLOW MODEL THAT WILL SIMULATE THE RESPONSE OF THE INTERIOR ICE SHEET TO OBSERVED PERTURBATIONS IN OUTLET GLACIER FLUX. WE WILL USE THIS MODEL TO (1) INVESTIGATE HOW GEOMETRY AND OTHER GLACIOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF OUTLET GLACIERS AND THEIR CATCHMENTS REGULATE THEIR DYNAMIC RESPONSE TO PERTURBATIONS AT THEIR FRONTS AND (2) ESTIMATE THE CONTRIBUTION OF CHANGES IN ICE SHEET DYNAMICS TO SEA LEVEL RISE BY 2100 FOR A RANGE IN POSSIBLE FORCING SCENARIOS OUR PROPOSAL DIRECTLY ADDRESSES THE OBJECTIVE OF THE NRA TO ADVANCE UNDERSTANDING OF LAND-ICE PROCESSES, ESPECIALLY ... DETERMINING HOW THE ICE SHEET INTERIOR IS TAPPED BY OUTLET GLACIERS AND MAKES EXTENSIVE USE OF NASA DATA, INCLUDING ICEBRIDGE REPEAT-ALTIMETRY DATA. THE POTENTIAL FOR ACCELERATED GLOBAL SEA LEVEL RISE DUE TO ANTHROPOGENIC CLIMATE WARMING IS A SIGNIFICANT SOCIETAL PROBLEM. MELTING OF THE ICE SHEETS IS THE LARGEST POTENTIAL CONTRIBUTOR TO GLOBAL SEA-LEVEL RISE AND THE STABILITY OF THE ANTARCTIC ICE SHEET IS ESPECIALLY CRITICAL BECAUSE A SMALL RELATIVE CHANGE IN ITS MASS CAN LEAD TO A LARGE CHANGE IN SEA-LEVEL. EVIDENCE EXISTS OF ACCELERATED ICE-SHEET ABLATION DURING THE PAST DECADE, AND ANTARCTICA MAY BECOME THE LARGEST CONTRIBUTOR TO SEA-LEVEL RISE DURING THE 21ST CENTURY. THE CONTEMPORARY (1992-2007) ANTARCTIC MASS BALANCE ESTIMATE HAS A WIDE RANGE, EQUIVALENT TO A -0.12 TO +0.40 MM/YR CONTRIBUTION TO SEA LEVEL, AND IT IS CRITICAL TO NARROW THIS UNCERTAINTY. IN PARTICULAR, SATELLITE RADAR ALTIMETRY (1992-2004) ESTIMATES THAT THE ANTARCTIC ICE-SHEET IS NEAR BALANCE, WHILE GRACE GRAVIMETRY (2002-2007) AND MASS BUDGET OBSERVATIONS FROM INSAR (2006) ESTIMATE MASS LOSS OF UP TO 150 GTON/YR (0.40 MM/YR SEA LEVEL RISE). EACH OF THESE METHODS HAS ITS OWN UNIQUE SOURCES OF UNCERTAINTIES THAT, WHEN APPLIED INDEPENDENTLY, YIELD ESTIMATES WITH LARGE DISCREPANCIES THAT ARE DIFFICULT TO RECONCILE. HOWEVER, SOURCES OF UNCERTAINTY ARE LARGELY COMPLEMENTARY BETWEEN METHODS. THUS, WE PROPOSE AN INTEGRATIVE APPROACH TO DETERMINE ICE-SHEET MASS BALANCE, FOR THE FIRST TIME, BY COMBINING MULTIPLE LASER/RADAR ALTIMETRY (ICESAT, AND ENVISAT/CRYOSAT), GRACE, AND SURFACE MASS BALANCE (SMB) MODELS IN CONCERT WITH EACH OTHER. THIS APPROACH WILL ALLOW FOR VALIDATION OF RESULTS USING INDEPENDENT OBSERVATIONS, AND ALLOW FOR IMPROVED CONSTRAINTS ON THE EFFECTS OF ISOSTASY, FIRN COMPACTION RATES AND SURFACE PROPERTIES THROUGH SENSOR AND MODEL INTER-COMPARISON. OUR ULTIMATE OBJECTIVE IS TO GENERATE AN IMPROVED, SPATIALLY RESOLVED, COMPOSITE -20-YEAR (1992-2010) ANTARCTIC ICE-SHEET MASS BALANCE TIME SERIES.
