AS DESCRIBED IN NASA S REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL, OCI-DET-SOW-0067 AND OCI-DET-SPEC- 0015 DOCUMENTS, THE PRIMARY TECHNICAL CHALLENGE FOR THESE INGAAS PHOTODIODES IS TO ACHIEVE A CAPACITANCE LESS THAN 11 PF AT NEAR PHOTOVOLTAIC OPERATION WITH AN ACTIVE AREA DIAMETER OF 350M. SUCH A LOW CAPACITANCE DEVICE REQUIRES AN INGAAS PHOTODIODE STRUCTURE HAVING A CAPACITANCE PER UNIT AREA OF<114 PF / MM2 AT A REVERSE BIAS OF 100 MV. ALSO, THESE DEVICES MUST WITHSTAND A PROTON RADIATION UP TO A FLUENCE LEVEL OF 2E10 / CM2 FOR AN ENVISIONED 3-YEAR LONG MISSION. THESE PHOTODIODES MUST BE INTEGRATED WITH JFET AMPLIFIERS IN A KOVAR PACKAGE, BOTH SUPPLIED BY NASA GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER (GSFC), TO MANUFACTURE SPACE-QUALIFIED PHOTODIODE SUBASSEMBLIES. DISCOVERY SEMICONDUCTORS SUBMITTED A PROPOSAL, TITLED SHORT-WAVE INFRARED INGAAS PHOTODIODE FOR OPTICAL COLOR INSTRUMENT (OCI) OF PACE MISSION, ON NOVEMBER 30, 2018. THE PROPOSAL LEVERAGED OUR PRIOR WORK IN DEVELOPING RAD-HARD, ULTRA-LOW NOISE, LARGE AREA INGAAS QUADRANT PHOTORECEIVERS FOR THE LASER INTERFEROMETER SPACE ANTENNA (LISA) MISSION, TO MANUFACTURE THE PACE PHOTODIODE FLIGHT UNITS. NASA REVIEWED OUR PROPOSAL AND SUGGESTED SPLITTING THE ACTIVITIES INTO THE FOLLOWING THREE OPTIONS FOR BUDGETARY REASONS: OPTION 1: PROCESS 350M DIAMETER PHOTODIODE CHIPS, AND DELIVER 10 CHIPS IN DIE FORM IN A GEL-PAK. OPTION 2: DESIGN AND MANUFACTURE (1) PHOTODIODE SUBMOUNT, (2) MOTHERBOARD SUBSTRATE, AND (3) CONTAINER NEEDED TO DEVELOP THE PHOTODIODE SUBASSEMBLY FLIGHT UNITS. WE WILL DELIVER 10 PHOTODIODE CHIPS MOUNTED ON PHOTODIODE SUBMOUNT AND MOTHERBOARD SUBSTRATE. OPTION 3: MANUFACTURE AND DELIVER 18 PHOTODIODE SUBASSEMBLY FLIGHT UNITS AND 18 FLIGHT SPARES WITH SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION. THE PHOTORECEIVERS ARE BASED ON LOW CAPACITANCE PER UNIT AREA PHOTODIODES, COMBINED WITH A COMMERCIAL OPERATIONAL AMPLIFIER, AND HAVE ACHIEVED LOW CROSS TALK, LOW CAPACITANCE, AND LOW NOISE. WITH THE SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THE DESIGN GOALS OF THE QUAD PHOTORECEIVERS, THE LISA COMMUNITY WORLDWIDE IS EAGER TO HAVE THESE DEVICES SPACE-FLIGHT READY. THUS, THE MATERIALS INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION EXPERIMENT (MISSE) FF IS A PERFECT VEHICLE TO LAUNCH THESE QUAD RECEIVERS IN SPACE, AND OPERATE THEM FOR 12 TO 18 MONTHS IN HARSH CONDITIONS. THUS, OUR PHASE I OBJECTIVE WILL BE TO PERFORM THE FIVE KEY MIL-STD TESTS, ON THE LISA GRAVITY WAVE INGAAS QUAD PHOTORECEIVERS. | IGF::OT::IGF DISCOVERY SEMICONDUCTORS AND LOCKHEED MARTIN ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY LABORATORIES HAVE TEAMED TOGETHER TO DESIGN A UNIVERSAL LIDAR SYSTEM THAT WILL WORK FOR NASA'S DIVERSE RANGE OF APPLICATIONS. WE PROPOSE A FIBER-BASED, SELF-HETERODYNE LIDAR, AT 2050 NM WAVELENGTH, WHOSE TRANSMITTED OPTICAL SIGNAL IS MODULATED BY A 10 GBPS PROGRAMMABLE PSEUDORANDOM (PRN) SEQUENCE. THE LIDAR'S RESOLUTION AND SENSITIVITY WILL BE TUNED BY CHOOSING THE APPROPRIATE PRN SEQUENCE. A PRN LENGTH OF 1 WILL PROVIDE THE FINEST RESOLUTION OF 1.5 CM WITH 1 UW SENSITIVITY. INCREASING THE PRN LENGTH TO 100,000 WILL IMPROVE THE SENSITIVITY TO 10 PW FOR 1.5 KM RESOLUTION. SEVERAL NASA APPLICATIONS WILL BE COVERED BY THE NEW INNOVATION INCLUDING: 1) THERMOMETRY AND SPECTROSCOPY OF ROCKET PLUMES AND JET ENGINE FLAMES WITH CM SCALE RESOLUTION, 2) LASER DOPPLER VELOCIMETRY IN HYPERSONIC WIND TUNNELS UP TO MACH 20, 3) NAVIGATIONAL LIDARS FOR PLANETARY LANDING MISSION THAT NEED VELOCITY AND ALTITUDE MEASUREMENTS WITH SUB-METER ACCURACY, 4) CLEAR AIR TURBULENCE MEASUREMENTS HAVING 10 M OR HIGHER RESOLUTION, AND 5) SPACE BASED WIND LIDAR FOR ENVIRONMENTAL SENSING HAVING 1 KM RESOLUTION.
