THIS METHOD ALLOWS TESTING OF COMPLEX PARTS WITH EMBEDDED SENSITIVE VOLUMES THAT CANNOT BE TESTED WITH LOW ENERGY HEAVY IONS OR PROTONS. THIS DEVELOPMENT ENTAILS WORK WITH THE NASA SPACE RADIATION LABORATORY (NSRL) PERSONNEL TO DEVELOP INSTRUMENTATION, PROCEDURES AND SOFTWARE TO MAKE RADIATION EFFECTS TESTING WITH RELATIVISTIC HEAVY IONS USING THE VDBP AND OTHER METHODS ROUTINE AND EFFICIENT. WORK TO RESOLVE AN APPARENT ION SPECIES DEPENDENCE OBSERVED FOR ONE PART, THE AEROFLEX RADHARD BY DESIGN 4M SRAM X32 UTBR128K32 DURING FEASIBILITY DEMONSTRATION MEASUREMENTS WITH THE VDBP METHOD. WORK WITH NASA/JSC TO PERFORM TESTS OF DEVICES TO DEMONSTRATE THAT OTHER RADIATION EFFECTS THAN SINGLE EVENT UPSETS/TRANSIENTS, SUCH AS LATCH-UP, BURN OUT AND GATE RUPTURE, CAN BE OBSERVED WITH THE VDBP METHOD. WORK WITH NSRL, BNL, NASA AND OTHER INTERESTED PARTIES TO DEVELOP AN ADMINISTRATIVE STRUCTURE TO MAKE THE NSRL RADIATION EFFECTS IN MICROELECTRONICS TEST CAPABILITY ROUTINELY AVAILABLE TO THE RADIATION EFFECTS COMMUNITY TASK 1 THE CONTRACTOR SHALL ADVISE AND ASSIST IN DEVELOPMENT AND DEMONSTRATION OF A HIGH ENERGY HEAVY ION BOARD LEVEL SINGLE EVENT EFFECT (SEE) GROUND-BASED TEST METHOD AND CAPABILITY, THE VARIABLE DEPTH BRAGG PEAK (VDBP) METHOD AT NSRL. TASK 2 - THE CONTRACTOR SHALL ADVISE AND ASSIST WITH WORK TO RESOLVE AN APPARENT ION SPECIES DEPENDENCE OBSERVED IN VDBP DEMONSTRATION EXPERIMENTS FOR ONE PART, THE AEROFLEX RADHARD BY DESIGN 4M SRAM X32 UTBR128K32. | INVESTIGATING RADIATION PARTICLE INTERACTIONS WITH SILICON USING COMPUTER ANALYTICAL METHODS-THIS WORK WILL CONTINUE TO INVESTIGATE THE MODELING OF PHYSICAL INTERACTIONS OF INCIDENT IONIZING RADIATION PARTICLE TRANSPORT THROUGH SILICON-BASED SEMICONDUCTOR MATERIALS. OF TOPINTEREST ARE HIGH-ENERGY HEAVY ION INTERACTIONS EMPHASIZING THE RANGE, LINEAR ENERGY TRANSFER (LET), AND ENERGY DEPOSITION OF BOTH DIRECT IONIZATION AND SECONDARY PRODUCTS, AS THEY RELATE TO SINGLE EVENT UPSET (SEU) RATES IN DEEP SPACE. DEVELOPMENT OF A HIGH ENERGY HEAVY ION BOX LEVEL TEST METHOD, THE MODELING CODES AND HARDWARE NEEDED TO DEVELOP AND SUPPORT THE METHOD ARE OF PARTICULAR INTEREST. THIS INVESTIGATION SHALL BE ACCOMPLISHED BY USING CURRENT APPLICABLE SOFTWARE MODELING CODES.REQUIRED THE FOLLOWING ARE TASKS TO BE PERFORMED BY THE CONTRACTOR TO FURTHER THIS INVESTIGATION: TASK 1 HEAVY IONS SECONDARY FRAGMENTS TASK 1A MODIFY, CHECK AND VERIFY PROPSET TO INCLUDE SECONDARY FRAGMENTS FROM HIGH ENERGY HEAVY ION REACTIONS. TASK 1B PERFORM CALCULATIONS WITH PROPSET AS NEEDED TO CHECK AND VERIFY THE CODE. TASK 1C PERFORM VARIOUS STUDIES WITH THE MODIFIED CODE PROPSET, CR ME-MC, FLUKA AND OTHER CODES TO DETERMINE IF AND HOW SECONDARY FRAGMENTS PRODUCED BY HEAVY ION REACTIONS WITH SILICON AND OTHER ELEMENTS IN MICRO-ELECTRONIC DEVICES MAY BE USED AS PART OF A SYSTEM TEST METHOD FOR DEEP SPACE ENVIRONMENTS OR HOW THEY MAY EFFECT THE VARIABLE DEPTH BRAGG PEAK METHOD DESCRIBED BELOW. TASK 1D SEARCH THE LITERATURE FOR INFORMATION THAT MAY AID IN THE INTERPRETATION AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE RESULTS OF CALCULATIONS OF SEU RATES PRODUCED BY SECONDARY FRAGMENTS FROM HIGH ENERGY HEAVY ION REACTIONS WITH SILICON. TASK 1E PREPARE PROGRESS REPORTS AND OTHER PRESENTATIONS DESCRIBING THE WORK AND/OR THE MODEL. TASK 2 VARIABLE DEPTH BRAGG PEAK (VDBP) METHOD TASK 2A COMPLETE DEVELOPMENT OF THE NASA CODE VDBP TO INCLUDE THE FEATURES AND PRECISION NEEDED TO DEFINE THE TEST METHOD IN DETAIL AND TO SPECIFY THE REQUIRED HARDWARE TO IMPLEMENT THE METHOD. TASK 2B USE THE CODE VDBP TO DEFINE THE TEST METHOD AND AID IN THE DESIGN AND PLANNING OF EXPERIMENTS TO VALIDATE THE METHOD. THIS MUST BE DONE IN CLOSE COORDINATION WITH NSRL (BROOKHAVEN) LIAISON PERSONNEL. TASK 2C PARTICIPATE IN THE PREPARATION OF BEAM REQUEST PROPOSALS FOR SUBMISSION TO NSRL FOR VDBP VALIDATION EXPERIMENTS AND FOR BOARD AND BOX LEVEL TESTS. TASK 2D AID IN THE DEVELOPMENT AND INTERPRETATION OF RADIOGRAPHIC TECHNIQUES RELEVANT TO THE VDBP METHOD. TASK 2E SUPPORT, ANALYZE AND PRESENT RESULTS OF ACCELERATOR-BASED CALIBRATIONS AND EXPERIMENTS USING THE VDBP METHOD AS AGREED UPON WITH NASA/JSC WITH THE GOAL OF DETERMINING ON-ORBIT UPSET RATES FOR MICRO-ELECTRONIC PARTS, BOARDS AND SYSTEMS. TASK 2F PREPARE PROGRESS REPORTS AND OTHER PRESENTATIONS, WHICH DESCRIBE THE VDBP METHOD AND ITS DEVELOPMENT, IMPLEMENTATION AND USE. TASK 2G SEARCH THE LITERATURE FOR INFORMATION THAT MAY AID IN THE INTERPRETATION AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE RESULTS OF MEASUREMENTS OF SEU RATES BY THE VDBP METHOD AND THE APPLICATION OF THESE MEASURED RATES TO PREDICTIONS OF RATES IN DEEP SPACE. RESULTS & DELIVERABLES: FOR EACH INVESTIGATION RUN, THE CONTRACTOR SHALL DELIVER TO NASA ALL MODEL INPUTS AND ASSUMPTIONS, THE PROCEDURES AND METHODS USED TO CARRY OUT THE INVESTIGATION, ALL MODEL OUTPUTS, DATA FILES AND CORRESPONDING RESULTS. FOR SPECIFICATION AND DESIGN WORK, DRAWINGS AND SPECIFICATIONS MADE BY THE CONTRACTOR SHALL BE DELIVERED TO NASA. WHEN THE SAME INVESTIGATION IS PERFORMED USING DIFFERENT MODELS, A COMPARISON BETWEEN THEIR RESULTS SHALL BE PROVIDED.
