The purpose of the MSPP is to develop a broad pool of combined-degree students (e.g., MD/PhD, DDS/PhD, DVM/PhD) who have conducted their PhD dissertation research at research laboratories in the NIH Intramural Research Program. The recipients will receive rigorous training in the basic, translational, and clinical biomedical sciences to prepare them for leadership positions in biomedical careers. The research and training plans are expected to provide the recipients with a strong understanding of the rigorous research study design, critical thinking, experimental methods and rigor, quantitative approaches, bioethics, and data analysis. Training also includes a mentored research experience, and extensive career and professional development, mentoring, and networking opportunities planned and supported by the program. This program thus provides the knowledge, professional skills, and experiences required to identify and transition into careers in the biomedical research workforce that utilize the combined degree.
