2Opportunity : Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), operated by the Lawrence Livermore National Security (LLNS), LLC under contract no. DE-AC52-07NA27344 (Contract 44) with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), is offering the opportunity to enter into a collaboration to further develop and commercialize its Direct Conversion of Air to Ammonia and Nitric Acid using Advanced Manufactured Electrochemical React...
View moreDescription:
LLNL researchers have developed an ammonia production method that circumvents the Haber–Bosch process altogether. The team’s research efforts represent Livermore’s growing expertise in electrocatalytic reactor systems. The final conversion of nitrate to ammonia—reduction—is well established in scientific literature, so LLNL concentrated their research efforts on the more challenging first phase (oxidation of nitrogen into nitrate), using an additively manufactured optimized anode design.

Lawrence Livermore National Security (LLNS), LLC, operating the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) under a Department of Energy contract, is offering a collaborative opportunity to further develop and commercialize a system for the direct conversion of air to ammonia and nitric acid. This technology utilizes advanced manufactured electrochemical reactors to provide a cleaner, more efficient alternative to the energy-intensive Haber-Bosch process. By using an additively manufactured optimized anode design for nitrogen oxidation, the method eliminates the need for high-temperature operations, toxic materials, and costly separation processes. The technology is currently at a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of 3-5, and LLNL has filed U.S. Patent Application No. 2024/0301569 to protect the invention.
The Department of Energy has classified this special notice under NAICS 325311, Nitrogenous Fertilizer Manufacturing. The primary purpose of this non-procurement notice is to identify industry partners with the capability to bring these electrochemical reactor inventions to market for applications in agriculture and industrial refrigeration. Interested parties must provide a statement of interest detailing corporate expertise and facilities relevant to the commercialization of this technology.
Managed by the Innovation and Partnerships Office in Livermore, California, this opportunity is identified by solicitation number IL-13693. Responses, including company information and a description of relevant expertise, must be submitted electronically or in writing to the point of contact, Jared Lynch, by the deadline of May 27, 2026. Licensing activities associated with this technology transfer will be conducted under strict nondisclosure policies regarding company proprietary information.
