IGF::OT::IGF SBIR PHASE III: NASA IS CURRENTLY WORKING TOWARD DEMONSTRATION OF A LARGE (1 MW) FULLY SUPERCONDUCTING ELECTRIC MACHINE. A LOW AC LOSS SUPERCONDUCTING MATERIAL IS NEEDED FOR THE STATOR OF THE MACHINE. PAST AND CURRENT WORK INDICATES THAT MGB2 WIRE IS SUITABLE FOR THIS DEVELOPMENT EFFORT. THE MACHINE WILL HAVE A 3 PHASE, 4 POLE STATOR COOLED WITH LIQUID HYDROGEN. COILS FABRICATED USING THE BEST AVAILABLE MGB2 WIRE ARE NEEDED FOR PRELIMINARY TESTING AND DOWN SELECT OF THE FINAL STATOR DESIGN. THE FINAL STATOR COILS WILL ALSO BE REQUIRED BUT ARE OUT OF SCOPE FOR THE CURRENT PROPOSED EFFORT. COIL ASSEMBLIES DELIVERED UNDER THIS EFFORT WILL BE CONSIDERED MANUFACTURING TRIAL, BEST EFFORT, AND WILL BE USED FOR COOLING MODEL VALIDATION, CRITICAL CURRENT MEASUREMENT, AND AC LOSS MEASUREMENTS. NASA WILL SUPPLY THE DESIRED CURRENT, NUMBER OF TURNS, TARGET LOSSES, AND GEOMETRY OF THE COILS, FINAL CONDITIONS WILL BE AGREED UP BETWEEN NASA AND HYPER TECH. COILS WILL INCLUDE FLATTENED VERSIONS OF DISTRIBUTED WINDINGS AND CONCENTRATED WINDINGS WITH AGREED UPON COIL FORMER MATERIALS AND REPRESENTATIVE MANUFACTURING PROCESSES. PROPER COOLING OF THE SUPERCONDUCTING WIRE HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AS A MAJOR CHALLENGE OF THE MACHINE DESIGN. THE COIL SUPPORT STRUCTURE (TO BE DESIGNED BY NASA) SHALL INCLUDE PROVISIONS TO ALLOW FOR ADEQUATE FLOW OF LIQUID HYDROGEN TO ACHIEVE THE REQUIRED COOLING MARGIN ON THE FABRICATED COILS DESCRIBED BELOW THAT ARE MADE WITH ONLY MGB2 WIRE, BRAIDED INSULATION AND EPOXY. THE COILS WILL BE USED TO DEMONSTRATE MECHANICAL PROCESSING AND FOR USE IN HEAT TRANSFER TESTS USING FLOWING LIQUID NITROGEN BY NASA. THE COILS WILL BE FABRICATED FROM THE CURRENT BEST AC LOSS WIRE WITH THE CURRENT LEVEL AGREED BETWEEN NASA AND HYPER TECH. THESE COILS WILL BE USED TO MEASURE CRITICAL CURRENT BY HYPER TECH (OSU SUBCONTRACTOR) OF THE PROCESSED COILS AND BY NASA FOR MEASUREMENT OF THE AC LOSS OF THE COILS IN SELF-FIELD, NASA TO SUPPLY TO THEIR SUBCONTRACTOR FOR AC LOSS TESTING.
