| THE ATMOSPHERES OF PLUTO, TRITON AND TITAN ARE COLD AND HAZY, PROVIDING A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO STUDY HOW HAZE PARTICLES INFLUENCE THE ATMOSPHERIC THERMAL STRUCTURES ON THOSE LOW-GRAVITY ICY BODIES. THEIR TEMPERATURE AND HAZE PARTICLE DISTRIBUTIONS HAVE BEEN DERIVED FROM BOTH GROUND-BASED STELLAR OCCULTATION AND SPACECRAFT FLYBY MEASUREMENTS FROM VOYAGER, CASSINI AND NEW HORIZONS. RECENTLY OUR TEAM HAS DISCOVERED THAT HYDROCARBON HAZE PARTICLES COULD CONTROL THE RADIATIVE HEATING AND COOLING OF PLUTO'S ATMOSPHERE. IT IMPLIES THAT HAZE PARTICLES MIGHT ALSO HAVE SUBSTANTIAL RADIATIVE EFFECTS ON THE TEMPERATURE STRUCTURES ON TRITON AND THE UPPER ATMOSPHERE OF TITAN (400-1000 KM) BUT THE EFFECTS HAVE NOT BEEN THOROUGHLY INVESTIGATED. HERE WE PROPOSE A SYSTEMATIC STUDY ON ALL THREE ICY BODIES. FOR EACH BODY, WE PLAN TO USE A WELL-ESTABLISHED MICROPHYSICAL MODEL OF HYDROCARBON HAZE FORMATION TO PREDICT THE DISTRIBUTIONS OF PARTICLE SIZE AND ABUNDANCE. THEN WE WILL USE A THERMAL STRUCTURE MODEL WITH THE RADIATIVE EFFECTS FROM HAZES AND GASES TO INVESTIGATE THE HAZE RADIATIVE EFFECT ON THE THERMAL STRUCTURE OF THE ATMOSPHERE. OBSERVED PARTICLE OPACITIES AND REFLECTION SPECTRA WILL BE USED TO CONSTRAIN THE HAZE FORMATION MODEL AND THE RESULTANT THERMAL STRUCTURES WILL BE COMPARED WITH THE OBSERVATIONS. WE WILL ALSO PRODUCE THERMAL ROTATIONAL LIGHT CURVES AND INFRARED SPECTRA TO COMPARE WITH AVAILABLE SPITZER OBSERVATIONS AND THE PLANNED JAMES WEBB SPACE TELESCOPE GTO OBSERVATIONS ON PLUTO AND TRITON DURING THIS PROPOSAL PERIOD. BASED ON THE INDIVIDUAL INVESTIGATION OF EACH BODY AND COMPARATIVE PLANETOLOGY, WE WILL UNVEIL THE UNDERLYING PHYSICAL MECHANISM THAT GOVERNS THE ENERGY BALANCE ON THOSE COLD AND HAZY ATMOSPHERES. | ENTRY, DESCENT, AND LANDING (EDL) ARE AMONG THE MOST CRITICAL PHASES FOR A PLANETARY MISSION. A CREWED MARS MISSION WILL REQUIRE A LANDING PRECISION THAT IS TWO ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE HIGHER THAN THE BEST PRECISION EVER ACHIEVED IN ROBOTIC MISSIONS THUS FAR. THE REQUIREMENT TO LAND A SIGNIFICANTLY HEAVIER MASS FOR A HUMAN MISSION BY ALL-PROPULSIVE SYSTEM ALSO PUTS MUCH GREATER PREMIUM ON REDUCING THE PROPELLANT CONSUMPTION DURING THE POWERED DESCENT AND LANDING. LANDING HUMAN ON THE MOON AND RETURNING TO EARTH IN A SAFER, MORE FLEXIBLE AND ACCURATE FASHION THAN IN THE APOLLO ERA IS MADE FEASIBLE WITH ADVANCED EDL GUIDANCE, NAVIGATION, AND CONTROL TECHNOLOGIES. FOR A HUMAN MARS MISSION, AEROCAPTURE IS AN ENABLING TECHNOLOGY THAT CAN PLACE THE ARRIVING SPACECRAFT IN A MARTIAN ORBIT WITH LITTLE PROPELLANT USAGE. TO ACHIEVE THE HIGH PRECISION FOR ENSURED MISSION SUCCESS WHILE REQUIRING THE LEAST AMOUNT OF PROPELLANT, THE GUIDANCE ALGORITHMS MUST BE ROBUST, ACCURATE, AND OPTIMAL. UNLIKE THE TRADITIONAL DIVIDE-AND-CONQUER APPROACH IN GUIDANCE ANALYSIS AND DESIGN, THE ENTRY AND POWERED DESCENT GUIDANCE NEEDS TO WORK TOGETHER TO DETERMINE THE BEST ENTRY CONDITION, ENTRY TRAJECTORY AND POWERED DESCENT AND LANDING MANEUVERS TO MAXIMIZE THE PERFORMANCE AND PRECISION IN ALL POSSIBLE SCENARIOS. IN ADDITION, RECENT STUDIES HAVE BROUGHT THE POSSIBILITY THAT NON-TRADITIONAL AEROCAPTURE AND ENTRY FLIGHT WITH THE SO-CALLED DIRECT FORCE CONTROL APPROACH MAY YIELD BENEFITS OVER THE TRADITIONAL BANK-ANGLE-ONLY AEROASSIST FLIGHT IN CERTAIN CASES. A LOW AC LOSS SUPERCONDUCTING MATERIAL IS NEEDED FOR THE STATOR OF THE MACHINE. PAST AND CURRENT WORK INDICATES THAT MGB2 WIRE IS SUITABLE FOR THIS DEVELOPMENT EFFORT. THE MACHINE WILL HAVE A 3 PHASE, 4 POLE STATOR COOLED WITH LIQUID HYDROGEN. COILS FABRICATED USING THE BEST AVAILABLE MGB2 WIRE ARE NEEDED FOR PRELIMINARY TESTING AND DOWN SELECT OF THE FINAL STATOR DESIGN. THE FINAL STATOR COILS WILL ALSO BE REQUIRED BUT ARE OUT OF SCOPE FOR THE CURRENT PROPOSED EFFORT. COIL ASSEMBLIES DELIVERED UNDER THIS EFFORT WILL BE CONSIDERED MANUFACTURING TRIAL, BEST EFFORT, AND WILL BE USED FOR COOLING MODEL VALIDATION, CRITICAL CURRENT MEASUREMENT, AND AC LOSS MEASUREMENTS. NASA WILL SUPPLY THE DESIRED CURRENT, NUMBER OF TURNS, TARGET LOSSES, AND GEOMETRY OF THE COILS, FINAL CONDITIONS WILL BE AGREED UP BETWEEN NASA AND HYPER TECH. COILS WILL INCLUDE FLATTENED VERSIONS OF DISTRIBUTED WINDINGS AND CONCENTRATED WINDINGS WITH AGREED UPON COIL FORMER MATERIALS AND REPRESENTATIVE MANUFACTURING PROCESSES. PROPER COOLING OF THE SUPERCONDUCTING WIRE HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AS A MAJOR CHALLENGE OF THE MACHINE DESIGN. THE COIL SUPPORT STRUCTURE (TO BE DESIGNED BY NASA) SHALL INCLUDE PROVISIONS TO ALLOW FOR ADEQUATE FLOW OF LIQUID HYDROGEN TO ACHIEVE THE REQUIRED COOLING MARGIN ON THE FABRICATED COILS DESCRIBED BELOW THAT ARE MADE WITH ONLY MGB2 WIRE, BRAIDED INSULATION AND EPOXY.
