THE SCIENCE MUSEUM OF MINNESOTA, COLLABORATING WITH THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION OPERATIONS OFFICE OF THE JOHNSON SPACE CENTER AR.D WITH SMM'S FIVE PARTNER MUSEUMS IN THE SCIENCE MUSEUM EXHIBITION COLLABORATIVE, HAS RECEIVED PARTIAL FUNDING FROM NASA AND OTHERS FOR A LARGE-SCALE TRAVELING EXHIBITION CALLED JOURNEY TO SPACE THAT WILL INTRODUCE MUSEUM VISITORS AND FAMILIES OF LOW-INCOME SCHOOL CHILDREN TO THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION AS A STEPPING STONE TO THE HUMAN EXPLORATION OF SPACE AND TO THE ENGINEERIR.G AND SCIENCE THAT MAKES SPACE HABITATION POSSIBLE. THE PROPOSAL REQUESTS FUNDS FOR ESTABLISHING A OONSULTINLJ PARTNERSHIP WITH SIX NASA VISITOR CENTERS FOCUSED ON HUMAN SPACE FLIGHT, WITH THREE ADDITIONAL INSTITTT.IONS WHO HAVE RECE1VED SPACE SHUTTLE ORBITERS, AND WITH THE CHALLENGER CENTER. SMM PROPOSES TO SHARE ITS EXPERIENCES DEVELOPING JOURNEY TO SPACE WITH SPACE CENTER HOUSTON, US SPACE&ROCKET CENTER, VIRGINIA A1R&SPACE CENTER, INFINITY SCIENCE CENTER, GREAT LAKES SCIENCE CENTER, KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, AND WITH THE CALIFORN!A SCIENCE CENTER, THE INTREPID MUSEUM, AND THE SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION'S UDVAR-HAZY CENTER. SMM WILL PARTICIPATE IN DISCUSSIONS ON HOW THE CENTERS MIGHT BUILD NEW AND BUILD UPON EXISTING COLLABORATIONS. REPRESENTATIVES OF THE CENTERS WILL ADVISE ON JOURNEY TO SJ'ACE PLANS AND DEVELOPMENT, PARTICULARLY FROM THE PERSPECTIVES AND INTERESTS OF !HEIR ASSOCIATED CENTERS. SMM WILL MAKE ITS IP AND PLANS FOR EXHIBIT COMPONENTS AVAILABLE TO THE CENTERS FOR REPLICATION AND EXPLORE WITH THE CENTERS OPTIONS FOR CREATING A SMALLER VERSION OF JOURNEY TO SPACE THAT IS SUITABLE FOR THE CENTERS' SMALLER SPACES. REQUESTED FUNDS WILL SUPPORT TWO MEETINGS OF THE GROUP IN SAINT PAUL, ONE IN FALL/WINTER 2012 AND THE SECOND AFTER JOT.;RNEY TO SPACE OPENS IN 2014. ADDITIONAL FUNDS ARE REQUESTED FOR PROTOTYPING EXHIBIT COMPONENTS OF SPECIFIC INTEREST TO THE CENTERS AND FOR COMPLETING L!JE SJMMATIVE EVALUATION THE EXHIBITION WITH THE CENTERS' NEEDS IN MIND. THE GOALS OF THE ENTIRE PROJECT ARE 1) TO PROV.DE A COMPELLING EXPERIENCE L!JAT WI!L MAKE PERSOR.AL CONNECTIONS TO SPACE EXPLORATION FOR A LARGE AUDIENCE; 2) TO ENGAGE THIS AUDIENCE IN STEM EXPERIENCES THAT HELP THEM UNDERSTAND THE PHYSICS OF MICROGRAVITY AND THE ENGINEERING THAT MAKES IT POSSIBLE TO LIVE AND WORK IN SPACE; AND 3) TO HELP THE AUDIENCE UNDERSTAND THAT THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION !SA STEPPING STONE TO FUTURE CREWED EXPLORATION OF SPACE. THE GOAL OF THE PARTNERSHIP IS TO SHARE EXPERIENCE AND EXPERTISE IN DEVELOPING INTERACTIVE EXHIBITS ON SPACE EXPLORATION THAT CAN REACH BROAD AUDIENCES AND TO ENGAGE IN DISCUSSIONS THAT CAN LEAD TO COLLABORATIVE PROJECTS THAT SERVE THE INTERESTS OF NASA'S VISITOR CENTERS AND COOPERATING INFORMAL STEM EDUCATION INSTIMIONS. THE EXHIBITION WILL REACH A BROAD PUBLIC AUDIENCE OF MORE THAN 3 MILLION ADULTS AND FAMILIES AND MORE THAN THREE-QUARTERS OF A MIL!ION TEACHERS AND STUDENTS BY USING INCLUSIONARY STRATEGIES THAT PROVIDE FULL ACCESS TO PEOPLE USING WHEELCHAIRS, PEOPLE WHO ARE DEAF OR HEARING-IMPAIRED, AND PEOPLE WHO ARE BLIND OR HAVE LOW VISION. \MITTEN COPY, MEDIA NARRATION, AND ALL COMPUTER INTERACTIVE PROGRAMS WIIL BE PRESENTED IN ENGLISH AND SPANISH. THE PROJECT WILL ALSO ENGAGE URBAN UPPER ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL YOUTH AND THEIR FAMILIES IN SAINT PAUL AND IN OTHER HOST CITIES IN THE HISTORICAL, SCIENTIFIC, TECHNICAL, AND IMAGINATIVE ACHIEVEMENTS OF SPACE EXPLORATION, PAST AND FUTURE THROUGH SPECIAL PROGRAMMING FACILITATED BY TEENS AND ORIENTED TOWARD A YOUTH AUDIENCE. SMM WILL PERFORM A COMPREHENSIVE FRONT-END, FORMATIVE, AND REMEDIAL EVALUATION OF THE PROJECT AND CONSULTANT ROCKMAN ET AL WILI PERFORRR. AND DISSEMINATE THE SUMMATIVE STUDY.
