THE SCIENCE MUSEUM OF MINNESOTA (SMM) REQUESTS NASA SUPPORT FOR ENGINEERING FOR SPACE EXPLORATION, WHICH WILL CREATE THREE IMPORTANT NEW SECTIONS IN A LARGE-SCALE TRAVELING EXHIBITION, JOURNEY TO SPACE. THESE SECTIONS WILL EMPHASIZE THE WORK THAT NASA AND ITS COMMERCIAL PARTNERS ARE CARRYING OUT TO MAKE LONG DISTANCE VOYAGES POSSIBLE SO THAT HUMAN BEINGS MAY JOURNEY TO ASTEROIDS, OTHER PLANETS, AND THEIR MOONS. IT IS PARTICULARLY APPOSITE, IN THIS PERIOD AFTER THE END OF THE SPACE SHUTTLE ERA, TO FOCUS AMERICANS ATTENTION ON THE PROMISES AND CHALLENGES FOR CREWED SPACE EXPLORATION IN THE 21ST CENTURY. THREE NEW SECTIONS OF THIS EXHIBITION ARE PROPOSED. 1) AN ENGAGING LAUNCH THEATER WHICH WILL INTRODUCE VISITORS TO THE CONCEPTS THEY WILL ENCOUNTER THROUGHOUT THE EXHIBITION: SPACE IS A HOSTILE AND DISORIENTING ENVIRONMENT. IT'S A CHALLENGE TO LIVE AND WORK IN SPACE. THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION IS A STEPPING STONE TO GREATER JOURNEYS AHEAD.
