| LUNAR ELECTRIC ROVER (LER) POWER SYSTEMS SUPPORT. TELEDYNE ENERGY SYSTEMS THE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT SUPPORT THAT WILL BE PROVIDED BY TELEDYNE ENERGY SYSTEMS, INC. (TESI) WILL PROVIDE NASA WITH INSIGHT INTO THE PERFORMANCE AND OPERATING CHARACTERISTICS OF THE 72-CELL NG-2000 FUEL CELL STACK THAT IS PLANNED FOR USE IN AN ANALOG DEMONSTRATION OF HYDROGEN/OXYGEN FUEL CELL POWER SYSTEMS FOR SURFACE AND STATIONARY POWER GENERATION ON EXTRATERRESTRIAL SURFACES. IN THE RECENT PAST (2005), TESI DELIVERED AN 8-KW ENGINEERING MODEL PROTON EXCHANGE MEMBRANE FUEL CELL POWER SYSTEM TO NASA AS A DELIVERABLE UNDER THE 2ND GENERATION LAUNCH TECHNOLOGIES/ORBITAL SPACE PLANE PROGRAM. AT ABOUT THAT SAME TIME, NASA WAS DEVELOPING IN-HOUSE A FUEL CELL SYSTEM THAT WAS INTENDED AS THE PRIMARY MOTIVE POWER SOURCE FOR THE SCIENCE, CREW, OPERATIONS,&UTILITY TEST BED (SCOUT) VEHICLE. FOR THAT EFFORT, NASA PROCURED A 72-CELL NG-2000 STACK FROM TESI, BUT THAT PROJECT WAS ULTIMATELY CANCELLED. AN IN-HOUSE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT EFFORT INVESTIGATING EJECTOR-BASED REACTANT CIRCULATION PUMPING WAS COMPLETED IN 2008, AND THE FINAL PRODUCT WAS A FUEL CELL OPERATIONAL VERIFICATION TEST BED, WHICH INCLUDED THE ORIGINAL SCOUT FUEL CELL STACK. | THE CALIBRATED OBSERVATIONS OF RADIANCE SPECTRA FROM THE ATMOSPHERE IN THE FAR-INFRARED (CORSAIR) PROJECT HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED TO PROVIDE FAR-INFRARED DETECTORS THAT DO NOT REQUIRE CRYOGENIC COOLING TO LIQUID NITROGEN OR LIQUID HELIUM TEMPERATURES FOR THE FUTURE NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION (NASA) CLIMATE ABSOLUTE RADIANCE AND REFRACTIVITY OBSERVATORY (CLARREO) MISSION. THE CLARREO MISSION WAS DEFINED BY THE RECENT NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCE DECADAL SURVEY. THE FUNDAMENTAL MEASUREMENT TO BE MADE AS PART OF THE CLARREO MISSION IS OF THE SPECTRALLY RESOLVED INFRARED RADIANCE (W CM-2 SR-1 CM-1) OF THE EARTH AND ITS ATMOSPHERE. IN PARTICULAR, MEASUREMENTS OF THE FAR-INFRARED SPECTRUM BETWEEN 15 AND 50 MICROMETERS IN WAVELENGTH ARE REQUIRED TO MEET THE CLARREO OBJECTIVES. THE WORK WILL FOCUS ON THE DEVELOPMENT AND DEMONSTRATION AT TECHNOLOGY READINESS LEVEL 6 (TRL-6) ANTENNA-COUPLED TERAHERTZ DETECTOR (ACTD) DEVICES CAPABLE OF MEETING THE CLARREO MISSION MEASUREMENT OBJECTIVES.
